This is the fourth book in the author’s series on Buddhist monasteries and temples. It is the first to deal with Mahayana Buddhism, which arrived in Ladakh in the 5th century A.D. from Tibet. This fusion of Hinduism and Buddhism gave rise to a rich and even mystical culture. Ladakh has been strongly influenced by its neighbor Tibet down the ages. Ladakh is full of monasteries, and is known as the Land of the Gompas’ (monasteries). This book is not a definitive work, but details the main monasteries of the region which gave been photographed and described here. It is hoped that is will kindle interest in the subject and be a useful companion to anyone interested in this school of Buddhism.
