Sense and Sensibility was Austen’s fi rst published novel for which she used the pseudonym ‘A Lady’. Advertised as an ‘Interesting Novel’, which at the time meant a love story, it received many favourable reviews. In the title, ‘sense’ refers to good judgement and is attributed to Elinor, while Marianne is identifi ed with ‘sensibility’ – emotionality or sensitivity. The novel has been adapted into several film, television and theatre productions such as Emma Thompson’s 1995 movie adaptation, directed by Ang Lee, and the popular Tamil film Kandukondain Kandukondain (2000), starring Aishwarya Rai Bachchan. Joanna Trollope’s modern retelling (2013) is part of The Austen Project, a series in which six contemporary novelists retell Austen’s six major works.
