If you want a scholarly/academic book on Bon religion this is the book for you. If you want a layman's approach this may not be the book for you. I have the honor to have two Bon religious Thangkas, one of Sherab Chamma and one of Nampar Gyalwa. My on-line research was helpful in determining and understanding their composition, attributes and religious significance and meaning. I was hoping this book would afford me more information. Chapter 1, Introduction to Bon Art by Jeff Watt, Sr. Curator at the Rubin MoA was the most layperson-friendly but I found more information on line through the Bon Centers. The differences between Bon vs. Buddhist works noted in Chapter One had some information but it was by no means extension. Lots of color plates (a magnifying glass helps) and descriptions of the plates are not always on the text page so a lot of flipping back and forth. Still, if you love Bon art and learning about the religion in an academic and scholarly way you will like the book but it's pretty dry. I do have to commend Donald Rubin and his wife, co-founders of the museum for their collection and fostering interest and study of the Bon religion.
