The partition of India was one of the most cataclysmic events in modern history. The transfer of power to India and Pakistan in August 1947 was the first major act of decolonization by the British, with significant consequences for their international status. In this book the author demonstrates, through a range of documents, that although consideration of the long-term strategic interests of the British counselled them against partition, their short term tactics contributed to its fruition.
