Swami Prananvananda was that unusual combination of ascetic and explorer geographer who, in the course of his wanderings in Himalayan hermitages, made several trips to Kailash and Manasarovar, including on each occasion a parikrama or circuit of the lake of Manasarovar. This book is the result, a scholarly description of the geography, the stages of the journey and the flora and fauna. Moreover, the Swami also traced the sources of four major rivers during his journeys in Tibet - the Indus, the Ganges, the Brahmaputra and the Sutlej, in the process belying some of Sven Hedin's prior claims to have been at the very spots. The Swami, in recognition is outstanding contributions to the geography of the region, was made a member by invitation of the Royal Geographical Society. He has also written a pilgrim's or travellers' guide to the region titled "Kailash Manasarovar". This book is a description of the journey, the route, the stages and objects of interest on the way as well as the legend and the science. A period piece that is still contemporary.
