BOOK SUMMARY

About the This amusing and often exaggerated account of an adventurous Englishman’s journey into Nepal and Tibet was received with much scepticism and ridicule by the scholars of those days. Written to thrill and amaze the reader, this book includes very illuminating paintings by the author who was, undoubtedly, a gifted artist. Whether or not he actually travelled to the parts he described is open to question; and he takes all opportunity to further his desire to be recognized as an explorer, naming peaks and glaciers after the members of his family, and leading us to believe that he travelled in some of the coldest and most inhospitable climates in nothing but his summer clothing. Of special note is his supposed capture and escape from the Tibetan authorities and their tortures. This is more of a novel than a travelogue. About the Arnold Henry Savage Landor was an English painter, explorer, writer, and anthropologist. He wrote in an often witty style. He left for Paris at the age of fifteen to study at the Académie Julian directed by Gustave Boulanger and Jules Lefebvre. He then traveled the world, including America, Japan, and Korea, painting many landscapes and portraits. Upon his return to England, he was invited to Balmoral by Queen Victoria to recount his adventures and show his drawings. He later traveled to Nepal and Tibet, telling of his experiences in two In the Forbidden Land (1898) and Tibet and Nepal (1905). He had an active role in World War I, designing tanks and airships. Eventually, he retired to write his autobiography in Florence, where he died in 1924.
