This is Tagore's own translation of his Bengali drama Natir Puja. It is one of his simplest and most moving plays. The drama is based on a Buddhist legend. According to Krishna Kripalani, in the character of Srimati, the nati (the palace dancer) is 'symbolised the great historical drama of the challenge of Buddhism to orthodox Hindu society.'
