Silent House, written by Orhan Pamuk. Set off in an old and silent mansion in a fishing village located on the Turkish coast lives and old and depressed widow - Fatma. A dwarf named Recep takes care of the chores of the house and is responsible of taking care of the grandmother. The grandchildren are three days away from arriving to her house and all the required preparations have been made. Fatma thinks about her grandchildren throughout the night as she tosses and turns in bed. She wonders about what she should talk about, eventually leading her thoughts into the past. The grandchildren finally arrive. Faruk, the oldest is a historian, recently divorced and alcoholic - Nilgun is a sociology student and a revolutionist - The youngest is Metin who is a high school student and dreams of getting rich in America. Fatma takes them to her late husband's grave but the children do not show much respect while she is praying. She takes their behaviour as insensitive.Then comes the entry of Hasan, Recep's cousin, who is a passionate right-wing nationalist threatens to bring the family into a long and bloody political war arising from Turkey's struggle for modernity. Silent House comprises of 32 chapters and each chapter is narrated in first person from different narrator characters, in their point of view. All the narrators have their own chapters and stories. The book was originally written in Turkish in the 1980s. This is the English edition and was published on 7th December, 2012 by Penguin India.
