Selected Poems (Penguin Classics) contains poems that epitomise the Victorian Age. The poems in the book trace almost 60 years in the literary career of one of the world's best poets, Alfred Tennyson, who lived in the 19th century. He mastered a wide variety of poetic forms and this selection includes some of his best works in full. These include Maud, which depicts a tragic love affair and in Memoriam, in which he pays profound tribute to his dearest friend. Idylls of the King depicts a lifelong passion for Arthurian legend, also seen in the dreamlike Lady of Shallot and Morte d'Arthur. His other works are in response to contemporary events such as Ode on the Death of the Duke of Wellington and Charge of the Light Brigade, which emits a patriotic flavor. Locksley Hall gives a utopian vision of the future, while Crossing the Bar is a haunting meditation of his own mortality. The book also throws light on Tennyson's life and works and includes a chronology, further reading and notes. The revised edition of Selected Poems (Penguin Classics) was published by Penguin UK in 2008 and is available in paperback format.
