This unique video documents a journey to Lo Manthang,
the ancient capital of Mustang, in Nepal, located beyond the
Himalayas on the Tibetan plateau.
The filmmaker visited Lo Manthang on the occasion of the Teeji
(Tempa Chirim) festival that the Tibetan Buddhists celebrate
every year in the cause of world peace.
This festival has been rarely filmed at length before.
The music and folksong of Lo Manthang are another memorable feature
of this video on this remote and fascinating city.
The video explores the cultural and historical background
of the land and its people, and discusses the potentials and
threats of any development of Mustang.

A Video Documentary
Eight mountains over 8,000 metres, extensive areas of unspoilt
wilderness protected in national parks, and the valley of the
sacred Bagmati River with its historic cities: Kathmandu, Patan
and Bhaktapur. Few other places in the world can offer
such a concentration of natural and cultural heritage.
With great technical expertise and a passion for the subject,
Renato Adorno documents not only the more famous architectural
sites associated with Buddhism and Hinduism, but also the main
religious festivals. And more particularly, he captures the ordinary
aspects of the daily life of the Newaris, which unfolds in the
shadow of the temples in an atmosphere that still seems medieval
to Western eyes. From the Kathmandu Valley, the camera
moves up to the high mountains. This is the world of white-water
rafting on the foaming highland rivers, and of trekking which,
with a spirit of adventure, shows the mosaic of the various peoples
inhabiting the high valleys, such as the Thakali people of the
Kali Gandaki area and the Sherpas of the Khumbu region.
This documentary constitutes a precious and unique record; its
images bring alive the very soul of Nepal, inviting us not only
to "see", but also to understand this great little
country, where the sacred and the profane, man and nature, still
exist in absolute harmony.
The Film Maker:
Renato Andorno is an Italian photo-reporter who has been operating
in the field of images for more than 40 years, collaborating
with many high-profile journals and periodicals. Armed
with his faithful Betacam-corder, he has worked in mountainous
regions all over the world, from the Himalaya to the Andes, and
has created many films for the RAI, the Italian national television
network, about the environment and diverse aspects of international
culture.
