Nepal
by Perceval Landon
This is a leading reference work on Nepal, based on the author's
travels to Nepal in 1908 and 1924.
Topics covered include the government, economy, history, geography,
architecture, religion, customs, weapons, flora and fauna of
Nepal. Excellent illustrations and maps.
"This study was commissioned by Maharaja Chandra Shamsher
and includes: a history of the country to 1877; a description
of the Kathmandu Valley and its monuments; a shorter survey (from
second-hand information) of Nepal outside the Valley; and an
account of the Shamsher maharajas, concentrating chiefly on Shamasher
himself. The historical material is sometimes highly misleading,
but the section on Chandra is informative, though very partisan.
Much useful information is presented in the many appendices,
including: heraldic details, words and music of the king's and
maharaja's anthems; texts and translations of the Ashokan inscriptions
at Lumbini and on the Nagali Sagar river near Niglihawa; and
lists of Residents and Residency Surgeons at Kathmandu amd of
the European visitors admitted to the country between 1881 and
1925 (usually around six a year). There is also an account of
early coinage by H. G. Bannerji, full genealogical charts for
both the Shah and Rana families, and detailed maps of eastern
and western Nepal." -- John Whelpton, Nepal (World

Nepal Himalaya
by H W Tilman
Nepal Himalaya is a book from the days of great travel
writing. It is a witty, ironic and romantic description of three
journeys made in 194950, just before the downfall of the
Rana regime, to the Langtang, Annapurna and Everest regions.
"Excellent read... an often amusing account of some early
trekking expeditions together with the odd mountain assault which
had, by today's standards, an amazing lack of advance planning."
- Hugh Finlay, Nepal (Lonely Planet)
"Chatty account of the first mountaineering reconnaissance
of Nepal in 194951... Tilman was one of the century's great
adventurers and his writing remains fresh and witty." -

Nepal, Land of Mystery: Adventures in Burma, China, India
and the Kingdom of Nepal
by Hassoldt Davis
"The author of this work accompanied Armand Denis and
Leila Roosevelt Denis on a visit to Nepal in 1939, when they
became the first professional filmmakers to be allowed into the
country. The Nepal section comprises just over half of the book
and is often sensational in tone, with accounts of highly dramatic
incidents, such as the apparently miraculous cure at Buddhanilkanthe,
which may have been embroidered by the author's imagination.
Nonetheless, Davis gives an excellent and extended description
of the difficulties of reaching Kathmandu before roads fit for
cars were constructed, and also draws a vivid picture of the
close supervision under which European visitors had to operate.
The book is one of the most readable of the pre-1950 accounts."

Toni Hagen's Nepal: The Kingdom in the Himalayas
by Toni Hagen. Revised and updated with Deepak Thapa
The Kingdom of Nepal, four times the size of Switzerland,
is situated on the southern slopes of the Himalayas, the mountain
range from which the highest summits in the world reach up into
the sky. Like the nature of the country, varied and rich in contrasts,
the inhabitants, too, were moulded variously and strikingly by
the environment.
The Sherpa and Bhotiya of the High Himalayan valleys live
sometimes only a few hours' walk away from mid-hill ethnic groups
such as the Tamang, Rai or Limbu, who themselves live up-valley
from the Chettri, Bahun and other Hindu caste groups. More ethnic
and caste groups live where the hills descend precipitously to
the Terai plains.
Heading out in the early 1950s from the hot and, at that time,
still malaria infested lowlands of the Terai plains, through
Nepal's Midlands (central hilly region) and up to and beyond
the arctic regions of the central Himalayas, with peaks that
attain heights of over 8000 m, covering a total distance of 14,000
km on foot, Swiss geologist Toni Hagen saw Nepal like no one
had before him -- and very few have since. He visited areas that
are still today closed to tourists and observed ceremonies and
customs which have today been overtaken by the march of time.
Toni Hagen set foot on every frontier crossing point into Tibet
and there was no valley that he did not visit.
This book introduced Nepal to the outside world, both in text
and in unmatched pictures of never-before-seen peoples and their
landscapes. Not only did Hagen introduce the country to the outside
world, it was also the first work to provide the leaders and
administrators of the newly awakened country --that is, the Nepalis
themselves -- with a holistic look at the geography and population
of Nepal.
"This 'coffee-table' book is illustrated by superb photographs,
which are mostly in colour... an excellent general account of
Nepal." -- John Whelpton, Nepal (World Bibliographical
Series)(ABC/Clio Press)

Picturesque Nepal

Percy Smith, of the Indian Educational Service and an art
specialist, created this extensive photographic record of the
then little-known state of Nepal during his extended visit there
in about 1910. He documents the wonderful art and craft of the
Newars, the inhabitants of the Kathmandu Valley. An interesting
period piece!

Sleeping in Caves: A Sixties Himalayan Memoir
by Marilyn Stablein
In 1965, Stablein drops out of Berkeley and travels to India
and Nepal with her lover. Their brief get away turns into a 7
year stay. "There are times when I ask myself", Stablein
writes, "What am I am doing here? My answer: to paint, to
study a culture; to uncover its secrets; to listen to the whisperings,
the sacred oral traditions; to learn by heart the names and faces
of deities so I can capture their images on paper and strive
to imbue each image with the greatness of its namesake, its spiritual
essence. Art is my muse and practice. The world is my palette,
artists my teachers; art lives and breathes in the people I meet".
In the heyday of the sixties Stablein encounters luminaries
of the American counter-culture like Ram Dass who she accompanies
to interview HH the Dalai Lama on the spiritual value of LSD.
Later, when the Indian police come to arrest Stablein for having
an expired visa, Kalu Rinpoche quips "The Buddha never had
visas," and orders her to hide in a closet next to his tantric
human bone costumes.
Includes photos and recipes.
Marilyn Stablein, writer, artist, and performer, is the author
of seven books and a frequent performer of her work. Her art
has been widely exhibited. She lives in the Hudson Valley and
co-directs, with her husband, Alternative Books and The Uptown:
A Performance Space in Kingston, NY.
"The funniest, best, truest (and secretly truest) writing
ever done on life in India."
-- Gary Snyder
"Marilyn Stablein's wry voice tells how it was, calmly
and clearly, unadorned .whether on the ground with sadhus and
chapatis or in the sky with diamonds these wry prose poems evoke
a last epiphany of the best of east and west." Keith
Dowman, author of The Power Places of Tibet

funny, and exhilarating."

The Snow Leopard
by Peter Matthiessen
"At sunrise the small expedition meets beneath a giant fig
beyond Pokhara -- two white sahibs, four sherpas, fourteen porters.
The sherpas are of the famous mountain tribe of north-east Nepal,
near Namche Bazaar, whose men accompany the ascents of the great
peaks..."
This is Peter Matthiessen's classic book on his 250 mile trek
in the Himalayas to observe the Himalayan blue sheep and to possibly
observe the elusive and almost mythical snow leopard.
But what began in part as an expedition patiently documenting
nature became a personal journey of self-discovery, a reflection
on the meaning of life. Written in the form of a diary, this
is an account of Matthiessen's meditations during the trek through
stunning landscapes and remarkable people which end with him
viewing the world from a Buddhist perspective.
Winner of the US National Book Award and the American Book Award.

The Wildest Dreams of Kew:
A Profile of Nepal
by Jeremy Bernstein
"And the wildest dreams of Kew are the facts of Kathmandu.."
-- Rudyard Kipling
In this impressionistic narrative of the history, land and people
of Nepal, the author takes the reader into "an extremely
vivid natural environment, frequently hostile, surrounded by
mountains, jungles, wild animals, ofter plagues, without doctors
to cure the sick, without electric lights to illuminate the night",
where "every object of nature becomes charged with mystical
powers, and the Himalayan snows floating above the Nepalese countryside
in serene, remote grandeur become the abodes of gods."
The book begins with a summary of Nepalese, especially the Rana
period (18461951). A portrait is then given of life in Kathmandu
at the time the author visited in the late 1960s. Finally an
interesting description is given of a trek in the Solu Khumbu
(Mt Everest) region. Much of this book originally appeared as
articles in the New Yorker magazine.

Kathmandu, the Forbidden Valley
Photographs by R Ian Lloyd. Text by Wendy Moore.
It wasn't until three decades ago that the mysteries of the
Valley began to unravel and the outside word discovered that,
lo and behold, all those fantastic rumours were true! Nowadays,
despite modernization and millions of internatinal visitors each
year, time seems to stand still in the Kathmandu Valley.
This is no more evident than in the pages of Kathmandu, the
Forbidden Valley, a vivid account of contemporary life in
the Nepalese heartland. They trace the unique religious and architectural
traditions of the region, dip into the area's colourful history
and flamboyant rulers, explore the lively heritage of art and
culture, and glimpse the everyday life of the people through
their work and worship.

Mister Raja's Neighbourhood: Letters from Nepal
by Jeff Greenwald
In the summer of 1983, journalist Jeff Greenwald went to Nepal
to write his first novel. What he wrote instead was a remarkable
account of a year spent living in Kathmandu, with side trips
to the erotic cave temples of India, the peaks and shrines of
Sri Lanka, the deserts of Rajasthan and the breathtaking ranges
of the Himalaya.
Here is the intimate, sensitive and witty chronicle of an
artist at work - at wonder in the festive, fragrant, sometimes
filthy, sometimes serene scenery of Asia.
Mister Raja's Neighbourhood is both spiritual and earthy,
personal and universal.
"Delightfully self-conscious and cynical... Greenwald
does give a good story, letting non-fiction fly into the wilds
of the imagination... He becomes the lone Western stranger lost
in an even stranger land of no boundaries and shocking custom,
and his journey becomes the epitome of his deep desire to enter
into a sacred place within himself" - Laurie Marks in the
San Francisco Express
"Mister Raja's Neighbourhood is a genre unto itself.
As a travelogue it delivers a rich sense of place. As the story
of a worshipful skeptic's quest to make art and find God (and
Goddess) in a strange land..., psychologically engrossing"
- Rob Brezny in The Sun
Recommended by: David Reed, Nepal (Rough Guides)
"The author, who came to Nepal in June 1983 to write
a novel, describes a year based in Kathmandu, from where he made
trips to India and Sri Lanka and, within the country, to Solo
Khumbu, Annapurna sanctuary, Chitawan and the Arun valley. Despite
its later date, the book recalls the atmosphere of the 'hippy'
years of the 1960s and early 1970s." - John Whelpton,

Himalayan Echoes: A Septuagenarian's Traverse of Mustang
and Inner Dolpo
by Phillip Sturgeon with Judith Forrestal
In this book the "Oldest Old Man in Trekking", Phillip
Sturgeon, gives an intriguing account of his most adventurous
trek through mysterious, remote Inner Dolpo, the lost kingdom
of Shangri La. This exotic inner sanctum of Himalayan life was
opened to Westerners only in 1992. Dr Sturgeon, his son Tim,
nephew Dave and colleague Robert Sparkes, along with their guides
and porters, were its first explorers.
The trekkers visit the village of Sangdok, follow the Karnali
River through Dolpo to the village of Tsharkha and arrive at
the enchanting Inner Dolpo villages of Ting Khyu, Shimen and
Saldang, where three of the group find the Lost Lama of Tsarang.
Finally, they reach the isolated Shey Gompa and the crystalline,
deep blue Lake Phoksumdo.
Dr Sturgeon reveals daily life as a septuagenarian trekker,
with all its pleasures and pains. With him you will visit fortresses
and monasteries, encounter nomads and salt caravans, ford icy
rivers, crest the dauntingly high Maha La at 16.500 feet, and
join the simple pleasures of daily village life.
Whether you are a trekker or an armchair traveller, a senior

The Last Forbidden Kingdom: Mustang, Land of Tibetan Buddhism
Text by Clara Marullo. Photographs by Vanessa Schuurbeue Boeye.
Mustang is a country frozen in time. Closed to foreigners
for more than thirty years, this tiny feudal kingdom high in
the Himalayas has existed in virtual isolation from the rest
of the world. Although politically part of Nepal, Mustang is
linked by religion, culture, and history to Tibetand now stands
alone as one of the last truly untouched temples, colorful festivals
and red-robed lamas, the kingdom preserves not only the daily
vernacular of Buddhist ethic, but a unique heritage of Tibetan
religious art.
In 1992 restrictions were eased, and the long forbidden kingdom
was cautiously unlocked. Clara Marullo and Vanesa Boeye were
among the few foreigners who made the arduous trek over the mountains
to discover this fabled land. This book is a riveting account
of their experience, and a unique view of the society that exists
there. With a wealth of magnificient color photographs, it is
also an evocative visual record of some of the most dramatic
and beautiful landscape in the world.

Mustang: A Lost Tibetan Kingdom
by Michel Peissel
Mustang lies on "the roof of the world", north of Nepal
and surrounded on three sides by Chinese-held Tibet. Foreigners
were forbiddne to enter the territory and virtually nothing was
known about its people and their civilisation until in 1964 Michel
Peissel obtained permission to make a long stay there. To reached
the walled capital, Lo Mantang, his small caravan of yaks and
porters had to make their way for fifteen days across the Himalayas.
In Mustang found a medieval world preserved from modern technology,
in which the wheel was not used, the earth was believed to be
flat and polyandry practised; but a land with beauty and happiness
in spite of hardships.
"Real treat for the armchair traveler" - New York
Times Book Review.
"Well written account" - Kerry Moran, Nepal
Handbook (Moon Publications)
"Presents an account of a journey in 1964 to Mustang, a
Tibetan kingdom which had been a tributary of Nepal since the
18th century and which at the time of the author's visit was
normally closed to outsiders. A straightforward narrative is
interspersed with material on local customs. There is an account
of a meeting with King Angun Tenzing Trandul and his son and
later successor, Jigme Dorje Trandul. A background theme is the
tension created by the recent Chinese subjugation of Tibet, and
the resistance of the Khampa guerrillas using Mustang as a base."
