Geological Studies in the Eastern Himalayas
Edited by Pramod Kumar Verma
The crest of one of the convection cells, set up within the
earth's mantle millions of years ago, lay under the Indian lithosphere.
The result was India's northward flight, which after a 5,000
kilometre journey was obstructed by a collision with Asia. The
collision was of such a gigantic scale that the resulting stress
distribution has been noticed as far north as Lake Baikal! The
most noticeable effect was the stupendous uplift of the Himalayas
and Tibet, triggering off the formation of thrusts, normal and
strike-slip faults, metamorphism, and formation of magma.
This book provides data and explanation about this process by
focussing attention on the eastern end of the Himalayas. The
main text is divided into three parts. The first part deals with
the regional setting of the Eastern Himalayas, while the second
part gives an analysis of the surrounding areas. The third part
presents an overview of the geology, tectonics and palaeontology.
and also area details hitherto unpublished.
This book should be of interest to senior students and researchers
of structural geology, tectonics, regional geology and petrology.
