(1) WELCOME
_____________________________

This month we present several of the great classic introductory books on
Buddhism.  These are followed by some inspiring works on Tibetan Buddhism.
See the "Books on Buddhism" and "A Glimpse into Tibetan Buddhism" sections
below.

Two books we would especially recommend to our readers:  The Kangchenjunga
Adventure (a death-defying attempt to climb the great Himalayan peak,
Kangchenjunga) and Shambhala (a study of the fascinating truth behind the
myth of Shangri-La).    For more details, see the "New Releases" section
below.

Last month our contest was won by people in Austria, England and the United
States.  In previous months our winners have come from Brazil, Canada,
Nepal and Singapore.  Our contests are open to people from every country;
so why don't you join in the January contest?  Just visit our website at:

(2) WIN A BOOK ON THE MAMMALS OF INDIA
_____________________________

Pilgrims is giving away THREE copies of "Sterndale's Mammalia of India", a
profusely-illustrated introduction to the abundant wildlife of India.

In this book the many species of animals from the Indian subcontinent take
to the stage: monkeys, bears, lions, tigers, leopards, cheetahs, hyenas,
mongooses, jackals, dolphins, deers, snakes -- and hundreds more equally
fascinating but lesser known animals.

This book, written in the heyday of British India, recalls a world of
jungles, plains and mountains where animals formed an intimate part of
everyday life. This fascinating guidebook will appeal to travellers and
nature lovers alike.

Entries close on January 31 and winners will be announced on the website on
February 15 and in the next issue of this newsletter.

Take a moment now to visit the Pilgrims website
http://www.pilgrimsbooks.com and enter this great contest.

(6) NEW RELEASES
_____________________________

*** The Kangchenjunga Adventure
by Francis S Smythe
This is the story of one of the first attempts to climb that great
Himalayan peak, Kangchenjunga. Known to local people as 'The Five Treasures
of Snow', Kangchenjunga, which rises to 28,208 ft., is the third highest
mountain in the world.
Seen from afar it seems to float serenely above the clouds. But to reach
the summit means a death-defying battle against the elements, biting cold
winds, barrages of snow and, worst of all, terrifying avalanches that sweep
constantly across entire faces of the mountain.
Francis Sydney Smythe mobilized this expedition which marched through
tropical Sikkim into 'Unknown Nepal' by way of Kang La, a 16,000 ft. pass
and then set up a base camp, ready for the attempt.
Varanasi & Kathmandu, Pilgrims Publishing, 2000
464 pages.  Paperback.  B&W photographs.
Price: $14.25.  ISBN: 81-7769-005-1.  Shipping Air/Sea $12.00 / $4.50

***  Shambhala: The Fascinating Truth Behind the Myth of Shangri-La
by Victoria LePage
Somewhere, beyond Tibet, lies a paradise of universal wisdom and
ineffectual peace known as Shambhala.  Called by some Shangri-La, this
mythical kingdom of jewel lakes, wish-fulfilling trees, and speaking stones
has fired the imagination of both actual explorers and travellers to the
inner realms.  This fascinating look behind the myth shows Shambhala to be
a "real" place, always accessible to the pure of heart.
"A well-reseached, well-written, and utterly fascinating account.  This
highly recommended book contains more of the pieces [of the Shambhala
puzzle] than any other publication to date." --George Feuerstein, Ph.D.,
co-author In Search of the Cradle of Civilization, author of Holy Madness,
Encyclopedic Dictionary of Yoga, and many other books.
Varanasi & Kathmandu, Pilgrims Publishing, 2000
309 pages.  Paperback.  B&W drawings and diagrams.
Price: $5.50.  ISBN: 81-7769-059-0.  Shipping Air/Sea: $3.00/$8.00

(7) QUOTABLE QUOTES ON MOUNTAINEERING
_____________________________

"There are only three real sports: bull-fighting, car racing and mountain
climbing. All the others are mere games."    -- Ernest Hemingway, US
novelist

"Because it is there."    -- George Leigh Mallory (1886-1924), British
mountaineer, answering the question "Why do you want to climb Mt. Everest ?"

"The first question which you will ask and which I must try to answer is
this, 'What is the use of climbing Mount Everest ?' and my answer must at
once be, 'It is no use'.
There is not the slightest prospect of any gain whatsoever. Oh, we may
learn a little about the behavior of the human body at high altitudes, and
possibly medical men may turn our observation to some account for the
purposes of aviation. But otherwise nothing will come of it. We shall not
bring back a single bit of gold or silver, not a gem, nor any coal or iron.
We shall not find a single foot of earth that can be planted with crops to
raise food. It's no use.
So, if you cannot understand that there is something in man which responds
to the challenge of this mountain and goes out to meet it, that the
struggle is the struggle of life itself upward and forever upward, then you
won't see why we go. What we get from this adventure is just sheer joy. And
joy is, after all, the end of life. We do not live to eat and make money.
We eat and make money to be able to enjoy life. That is what life means and
what life is for."    -- George Leigh Mallory, 1922

"Mountains are not fair or unfair, they are just dangerous."  -- Reinhold
Messner

"I have not conquered Everest, it has merely tolerated me"      -- Peter
Habeler

"Technique and ability alone do not get you to the top; it is the willpower
that is the most important. This willpower you cannot buy with money or be
given by others...it rises from your heart" -- Junko Tabei, who in 1975 was
the first woman to climb Everest

"I have climbed my mountain, but I must still live my life"  -- Tenzing
Norgay, who in 1953, with Edmund Hillary, made the first successful ascent
of Everest
