See the "New Releases" section below. India (and South Asia in general) is experiencing a huge popularity worldwide as people discover how excellent the writers from this part of the world truly are. Have you noticed how many South Asians have won the Booker Prize? This month we recommend several great Indian fiction books -- some serious ones, some for relaxation. See the "Fantastic Fiction" section below. Thanks to everyone who joined in our first contest last month. The prizes are now on their way to the lucky winners. "This is a quiet, low-key novel, notable for its vignettes [which] are so sharp, so rich in detail, that the book packs a real polemic punch. Fasting, Feasting is a fine showcase for the delicate, distinctive skills of Anita Desai." --Sunday Telegraph 228 pages. Paperback. Just north of the Great Wall of China lies the city of Jehol (or Cheng-te), which was once the magnificent summer capital of the Manchu emperors. In the eighteenth century, Jehol was at its zenith of power and influence. During this period the Emperor Ch'ien Lung (1736-96) built many magnificent monuments, including the Potala, built in the style of the style of the Potala in Lhasa, and the Hsin Kung temple monastery. Explorer Sven Hedin visited this city in 1930 and found Jehol and its monuments fast crumbling into ruin. In this book Hedin documents the city in detail, mindful that within a few years his descriptions and photographs could well be all that would remain of this magic city. 278 pages. Paperback. ISBN: 81-7769-009-4 Price: $US 9.00 Shipping - Sea/Air: $3.00/$8.50 For more details and to order visit: http://www.pilgrimsbooks.com/travel.html *** The Land of the Lamas by William Woodville Rockhill Notes of a journey through China, Mongolia and Tibet in the 1890s. Rockhill's fame rests on his diplomatic career, but he was first and always a dedicated, pioneering, and prolific Orientalist. Whether he was uncovering and translating ancient Chinese and Tibetan classics or exploring remote parts of China and Tibet between 1888 and 1892, with amazing indifference to his personal safety, Rockhill was driven by the late nineteenth-century search for "objective," scientific truth and the love of knowledge for its own sake. Rockhill was one of a handful of Westerners to penetrate Tibet and Mongolia, and in 1908 he was honored by having several long conversations with the Dalai Lama, who sought the American's advice on his delicate relationship with the Manchu Court and Tibet's future. Over a period of thirty years Rockhill produced dozens of significant books, articles, and papers that vividly depicted the physical landscape and sought to understand Asian societies. -- American National Biography (Vol. 18) 399 pages. Thou hast given me seats in homes not my own. Thou hast brought the distant near and made a brother of the stranger." -- Marcus Aurelius Roman emperor, 121-180, discussing books) "Nothing can supply the place of books. They are cheering or soothing companions in solitude, illness, affliction. The wealth of both continents would not compensate for the good they impart. Let every man, if possible, gather some good books under his roof, and obtain access for himself and family to some social library. Almost any luxury should be sacrificed to this." -- Dr. W. E. Channing, Self-culture _____________________________ (6) RARE BOOKS _____________________________ Pilgrims Book House stocks over 30,000 volumes of old & rare books: on many subjects and in several languages, including English, German, Sanskrit, Hindi and Nepali.
