Aama in America: A Pilgrimage of the Heart
by Broughton Coburn
"Spirituality is our lasting reference" -- Aama
Vishnu Maya, called Aama (Mother) by everyone in her tiny Nepali
village, was living high in the Himalayas when she befriended
American Peace Corps worker, Broughton Coburn, in 1974. In 1988
Aama came to visit him -- on a trip prescribed by village priests
as a way for the eighty-four year old, four-foot-eight woman
to earn merit by making a difficult journey late in life.
Aama in America is a vivid chronicle of what became a
25 state, coast-to-coast adventure. Guided by the perpetual curiosity
and deeply spiritual orientation of their ingenious, unpredictable
travel companion, Coburn and his fiancee gradually began to view
their country from an entirely new perspective. "Beneath
the uniform commercial, man-made epidermis of our country,"
Coburn writes, "Aama found a culture and a landscape that
was alive and sacred and she steered us toward it."
Aama in America is on one level an offbeat American travelogue.
But on another it is a profound exploration of beliefs, value
and lost spirituality, a rediscovery of the spirituality that
lies beneath the surface of America, and a singular account of
the meeting of two widely divergent cultures.
"A thought-provoking, enlightening story." -- Bellingham
Herald
"Coburn gives us a sense of what the New World was like
for the spiritually rich Aama But as the journey progresses,
he embarks on a journey of his own, an inner pilgrimage to a
place of psychic healing." -- Hartford Courant

Art and Meditation
by Anagarika Govinda
In Art and Meditation Lama Anagarika Govinda has shared
his profound insights into an artist's creative process and has
explored the similarities between true art and true religion.
His main interest is in the artist who works from the basis of
his enlightenment and sees the world around him with changed
eyes. For the author mediation is an art while art is a kind
of meditation which transcends purely aesthetic values and points
to lofty moral and religious ideals. "Complete ending of
the self," says the author, "is the ultimate aim of
both art and meditation."
"Anagorika Govinda has profound insights into the workings
of the human soul--its beauty and significance." -- J R
Santiago
Lama Anagorika B Govinda was an artist, monk, traveller and writer,
whose works include The Way of the White Clouds, Foundations
of Tibetan Mysticism and Insights of a Himalayan Pilgrim.
Born in Germany, he described himself as "an Indian national

"This is an indepth study of the development of Vedic religion
and spirituality in the subcontinent. The book attempts to condense

by Andre van der Braak
Enlightenment Blues is Andre van der Braak's compelling
account of his relationship with a prominent spiritual teacher.
It chronicles the author's spiritual journey and disenchantment,
as well as the development of a missionary and controversial
community around the teacher. It powerfully exposes the problems
and necessities of disentaglement from a spiritual path.
"Narrated with the psychological subtlety and drama of
a good novel, Enlightenemtn Blues is a precise, profound dissection
of the guru-devotee relationship. It should be required reading
for all who are currently engaged in or considering studying
under a spiritual teacher."
-- John Horfan, author of Rational Mysticism
"Enlightment Blues is the account of a young man's sincere
and protracted struggle to transform his life according to the
teachings of the American guru Andrew Cohen. Ruthlessly honest
and unsettling, Andre van de Braak gives a vivid first-hand account
of an uncompromising experiment in establishing Indian spirituality
in a modern Western setting. This story is essential reading

Sleeping in Caves: A Sixties Himalayan Memoir
by Marilyn Stablein
In 1965, Stablein drops out of Berkeley and travels to India
and Nepal with her lover. Their brief get away turns into a 7
year stay. "There are times when I ask myself", Stablein
writes, "What am I am doing here? My answer: to paint, to
study a culture; to uncover its secrets; to listen to the whisperings,
the sacred oral traditions; to learn by heart the names and faces
of deities so I can capture their images on paper and strive
to imbue each image with the greatness of its namesake, its spiritual
essence. Art is my muse and practice. The world is my palette,
artists my teachers; art lives and breathes in the people I meet".
In the heyday of the sixties Stablein encounters luminaries
of the American counter-culture like Ram Dass who she accompanies
to interview HH the Dalai Lama on the spiritual value of LSD.
Later, when the Indian police come to arrest Stablein for having
an expired visa, Kalu Rinpoche quips "The Buddha never had
visas," and orders her to hide in a closet next to his tantric
human bone costumes.
Includes photos and recipes.
Marilyn Stablein, writer, artist, and performer, is the author
of seven books and a frequent performer of her work. Her art
has been widely exhibited. She lives in the Hudson Valley and
co-directs, with her husband, Alternative Books and The Uptown:

"The funniest, best, truest (and secretly truest) writing
ever done on life in India."
-- Gary Snyder
"Marilyn Stablein's wry voice tells how it was, calmly

chapatis or in the sky with diamonds these wry prose poems evoke
a last epiphany of the best of east and west." Keith

Wind of the Spirit: A Selection of Talks on Theosophy - As
Related Primarily to Human Life and Human Problems
by Gottfried de Purucker
Wind of the Spirit makes a powerful appeal to each of
us to seek our own inspired vision to live by. The author shows
how the winds of change are coursing through world consciousness,
tearing away deadwood and making room for new growth. Nearly
a hundred articles examine such topics as the secret of human
conflict, guarding our thoughts, common sense in the home, prayer
and aspiration, soul loss and insincerity, predestination, help
from the gods, and three stages of visioning truth.
The wind of the spirit, at times chill and bleak, is ultimately
one of hope, for with it comes awareness of our common goals
as a humanity. "Universal Brotherhood - not merely vague
sentimentalism, but as a recognition of human solidarity based
on nature's own laws - is, after all, the keynote of any true
civilisation, and without it no civilisation can endure.
This is a practical book, helpful for the beginner, while the
long-time student will benefit from a fresh view of basic principles.

by Levi Dowling
This popular book, first published in 1908, is the amazing
story of Jesus, the man from Galilee, and how he attained the
Christ consciousness open to all men. It includes a complete
record of the "lost" eighteen years of his life, a

Greece, learning from the Masters, seers and wise men of the
East and the West in their temples and schools. Included in this
amazing book is information on the Council of the Seven Sages

Buddhism and Christianity
by Archibald Scott
Christianity and Buddhism are two of the world's great religions.
One is a teaching that defines good and evil under the presence
of a mightier being, and one is a philosophical path for the
individual without a higher divinity. Are there any common threads
between the two?
What concepts and concepts define these two faiths? Born from
different backgrounds, can either religion truly define the condition
of man or beast, of the living, of the dead, the reason for good
or evil? Is there any reason to think that Christianity is more
or less superior to Buddhism?
The author has sought to explore these two diverse beliefs.
Each has its historical aspects; each has its own set of defined
goals, perceptions and higher ideals.
Buddhism and Christianity is a riveting analysis, a
thought-provoking study of the dilemma of life.

The Lost Years of Jesus
by Elizabeth Clare Prophet
Ancient texts reveal that Jesus spent 17 years in the Orient.
They say that from the age of 13 to the age of 29 he was both
a student and teacher.
The events of his pilgrimage from Jerusalem to India were recorded
by Buddhist historians.
To this day Jesus is known and loved throughout the East as Saint
Issa.
For the first time Elizabeth Clare Prophet brings together the
testimony of four eyewitnesses of these remarkable documents.
With the thoroughness of a determined disciple turned detective
she tells the intriguing story of the international controversy
that arose when the manuscripts were first discovered by Nicolas
Notovitch- how experts "proved" they did not exist,
only to have them rediscovered in this century by Swami Abhedananda,
Professor Nicholas Roerich and Mme Elisabeth Caspari.
Now you can read in one volume the chronicles and legends of
what Jesus said and did in India, Nepal, Ladakh and Tibet prior
to his Palestinian mission, and the heartwarming personal accounts
of those who made the trek to the Himalayas and brought back
the most revolutionary message of our time.

Birdsong
by Rumi. Translated by Coleman Barker.
In your light I learn how to love.
In your beauty, how to make poems.
You dance inside my chest
where no one sees you,
but sometimes I do, and that
sight becomes this art.
Jalaluddin Rumi (1207-73) was a mystic Sufi poet of the 13th
century. He wrote in the Persian language and was one of the
innovators at using the the rubai, or four-line poem which
is indigenous to the Persian language.
Rumi wrote short poems that echo with the silence and love and
great cheerfulness they spring from, much as birdsong deepens
the quiet and, it may be, quickens the growing of a meadow. All
the natural phenomena come within the gamut of his imagery; at
times he seems to identify his mystical moods with the changing
face of nature about him. Rumi draws images of surprising beauty
out of his own spiritual consciousness, establishing an irrefutable
claim to be the great mystical poet Islam, and perhaps the world,
has ever produced.
The translator, Coleman Barks, has also translated and published
various esoteric poets like the Sixth Dalai Lama, Rigdzin Tsangyang
Gyatso and Jalaluddin Rumi, and these works are currently available
from Pilgrims Book House, Kathmandu.

The Mysticism Of Sound

All space is filled with sound, or what the Sufis call Saute
Surmad. The vibrations of this sound are too fine to be audible.
The author believes that it is this sound that is the source

same Truth. Inayat Khan holds the view that the knower of the
mystery of sound knows the mystery of the whole universe.
This wonderful book throws light on different aspects of the
beauty of music, which is now also being used in healing certain
kinds of psychological disorders.
Hazrat Inayat Khan (1882-1927) was born into a family of great
musicians in India. He was awarded the greatest music title in
India, "Tamsen", for his musical excellence. He firmly

The Secrets of the Self (Asrar-I-Khudi)
by Sheikh Muhammad Iqbal. Translated by Reynold A Nicholson.
This celebrated poem by Pakistan's philosopher-poet and political
leader, Muhummad Iqbal (1877-1938), caused a sensation among
the Muslims of British India when it was first published in 1915,
due to its egocentric character.
"In the Asrar, Iqbal emphasizes the importance of
the ego and its self-affirmation; he believes that the morality
of the individual and of the nation are determined by the answer
they give to the question: 'What is the nature of the ego?' This
emphasis is intended in part to counterbalance a certain tendency
in oriental thought and spirituality to stress the unitary point
of view, from which the individual exists only on an illusory
plane. Iqbal considered this to be a major cause of the fatalistic
passivity..., resulting in the decline in their [Muslim] religious
values and cultural and political fortunes during recent centuries
at the expense of those of the West." - Q M Haq / M I Waley,

Kabbalah: Your Path to Inner Freedom
by Ann Williams-Heller. Edited by Karen Goodrum.
Discover the Tree of Life as a tool for inner knowledge... The
Tree of Life is a symbol of extraordinary richness and meaning.
Its roots lie in the ancient mystical lore of Judaism, but it
has also branched out and flowered in many Western spiritual
traditions.
Based on her practical and popular Tree of Life workshops, the
author, Ann Williams-Heller, or Rabi-a (her Sufi name), demonstrates
the psychological and spiritual uses of the Kabbalistic Tree

to astrology, numerology, angel lore, tarot, and colour symbolism,
Williams-Heller shows the Tree of Life to be a potent tool for
self-discovery and profound inner knowing.

Basic Self Knowledge: An Introduction to Esoteric Psychology
Based on the Gurdjieff System of Esoteric Development with Reference
to the Writings of Krishnamurti
by Harry Benjamin
In the comentaries of Dr. Maurice Nicoll, the author, Harry Benjamin,
discovers the missing key to the problems of life. That key is
self-knowledge. It means thinking in a new way. What are the
basic requirements for such a quest?
In both Theosophic Mysticism and these commentaries, and in
the system of esoteric development expounded by Gurdjieff, are
the keys to the true meaning and purpose of existence. To understand
them, to live them, is to gain freedom from self-imprisonment
from which we all suffer.
Here, Harry Benjamin explores the essentials of this self-knowledge
and the basic Theosophic pattern underlying Nicoll, Gurdjieff
and Krishnamurti's teachings. They tell us what we have long
forgotten, 'that we and the universe are one.'
Chapters include a practical understanding and guidance on negative
emotions, gaining and losing force, internal and external accounts,
self observation, the limitation of logical thinking, three universal
forces, the way to self-knowledge, etc.

The Simple Way of Lao Tsze
by Lao Tsze (Lao Tse)
This classic Chinese manual on the art of living and on the art
of government is said to be the most translated work in the world
after the Bible. The 81 chapters of this book date from around
300 BC and are an early work of the Chinese religion and school
of philosophy called Taoism. The book presents in a deceptively
simple and laconic way - part poetry, part paradox - a collection
of sayings and commentaries on life and nature.
"Taoists watched water, opened their hearts and minds to
water's teachings; took water as an ally in understanding. Their
aqueous attitude washed out preconceived notions of religious
righteousness; dissolved rigid ways of viewing the universe;
liquefied frozen ambitions, social convictions, ideals and hopes.
The elegance of Taoism was taking humans from their everydayness
but not to grace, being and nothingness, or samsara - simply
to water, the liquid center of nature." - Peter Warshall,
