A Collection of Love Lyrics in India

by Laurence Hope (Adela Florence Nicolson)

Exotic Eastern poems of love, romance and mystery, with bold and sensuous illustrations of Indian women in deep rich colours.

The dominant notes of Indian love poetry are caught here vividly in the poems of Laurence Hope, the pen name of Adela Florence Nicolson (1865-1904), a remarkable woman poet of British India, who lived and loved in Baluchistan and Central India and came to love India and its traditions.

Her poems borrow inspiration, images and symbols from the poets of the North-West Frontier of India and the Sufi poets of Persia and have never been bettered since this book first appeared in 1902.

The lavish illustrations and decorations accompanying the poems are in the Art Nouveau style.

Originally entitled India's Love Lyrics, including the Garden of Kama, this book features 83 poems, including: "Valvogind's Boat Song"; "Mahomed Akram's Appeal to the Stars"; "When Love is Over: Song of Khan Zada"; "Ojira, to Her Lover"; "Deserted Gipsy's Song: Hillside Camp"; "The Regret of the Ranee in the Hall of Peacocks"; "There is No Breeze to Cool the Heat of Love"; "Starlight"; and "Song of the Devoted Slave".

Light of Asia

by Sir Edwin Arnold

The Light of Asia presents the life and teaching of the Buddha as told in verse by an imaginary Indian Buddhist devotee. Published originally in 1879 and always in print since that date, this book is a 19th Century example, in verse, of Eastern spirituality being presented to Western readers.

"I read The Light of Asia with even greater interest than I did the Bhagavad Gita. Once I had begun it I could not leave off." -- Mahatma Gandhi

"The Buddha story attracted me even in early boyhood and Edwin Arnold's The Light of Asia became on of my favourite books." -- Jawaharlal Nehru

"Mr. Edwin Arnold's poem, The Light of Asia, is the most sympathetic account ever published in Europe of the life and teaching of the Sakya Saint, Prince Gautama Siddartha, the Lord Buddha." -- The Times (London)

Mount Kailash and the Wonder Lake

by P C Bodh

In a far corner of western Tibet rises the awe-inspiring snowy peak of Mount Kailash. To Hindu and Buddhist pilgrims this is Tibet's sacred mountain. It is the "throne of the gods" where this world and the eternal unite and where every aspect of the landscape has a divine nature.

For thousands of years pilgrims have come here to pay homage. They chant mantras, spin prayer wheels, worship at shrines and perform the ancient ritual of circumambulation (walking around the mountain).

This book is the record of the author's own pilgrimage to Mt Kailash and of his feelings and fantasies as he traverses the barren wastelands of the Himalayas and the Tibetan plateau en route for Kailash. He depicts his fellow pilgrims and others met along the way. Using poetry and photographs, he interweaves his own story with the age-legends associated with this holy haven above the clouds.

Naked Song

by Lalla. Translated by Coleman Barks.

Self inside self. You are nothing but me.
Self inside self, I am only You.
What we are together
will never die.
The why and how of this?
What does it matter?

Lalla (1320-92), the 14th century North Indian mystic (also known as Lal Ded, Lal Didi and Mai Lal Didi, all variations on Grandma Lalla) was born in a Kashmiri village near Srinagar. Her whole life is steeped in legend. Tales of an unhappy marriage and cruel treatment by her in-laws and those of her devotion to God are rife.

Lalla's poems are still very much alive in the Kashmiri tongue. The poems attributed to Lalla express something greater than religion, in fact an awareness of things as they really are, the simple truths that remain unseen by men at large. Lalla's naked perception is the truth she knows, and that is always in motion, as she herself was, wandering and singing these songs in medieval Kashmir.

The translator, Coleman Barks, has also translated and published various esoteric poets like the Sixth Dalai Lama, Rigdzin Tsangyang Gyatso and Jalaluddin Rumi, and these works are currently available from Pilgrims Book House, Kathmandu.

The Prophet

by Khalil Gibran

Love one another, but make not a bond of love.
Let it rather be a moving sea between the shores of your souls.

Kahlil Gibran (Jubran Kahlil Jubran, 1883-1931) was born near Mount Lebanon. A Lebanese-American-Arabic novelist, poet and painter, he was a student of the sculptor Auguste Rodin in Paris and a student of Arabic literature in Beirut, from where he moved to Boston with his brother and sisters in 1902. He later settled in New York City in 1912. A romantic mystic and visionary, he preached love, beauty, freedom and redemption in his works.

The Prophet, written in 1923, is a mystical composition of prose poems. It carries a message of universal truths, each worthy of reflection and consideration by all thinking people. Even today Gilbran's message has relevance and is worthy of the place it holds in world literature. A perennial bestseller, The Prophet has been translated into more than twenty languages.

"No author of the East offers greater rewards than Kahlil Gibran, for he stands alone on the summit of all that is fine in Oriental literature." -- Anthony R Ferris

"This power came from some great reservoir of spiritual life, else it could have not been so universal and so potent; but the majesty and beauty of the language with which he clothed it were all his own." -- Claude Bragdon

Jog Mandalika Kabi ra Kabita (Poets and Poems by Jog Mandali)

Compiled & edited by Shradchandra Sharma

In the early years of the 20th century, a period when the Nepalese government was hostile to any organisational activities by poets and writers, poets would gather at various houses around Kathmandu to present their poems to each other.

One early group of poets which met in this way was called the Jogbir Mandali. This group included renowned poets of their day such Shambhu Prasad, Lekhnath Paudyal, Deepkeshwor Lohani, Chakrapani Chalise and Punyanath Lohani. They wrote poems in four languages -- Nepali, Hindi, Sanskrit and Nepali Bhasa, although Nepali was preferred.

This book is a compilation of poems written by these men and preserves for us today this remarkable collection of Nepali poetry.

Birdsong

by Rumi. Translated by Coleman Barker.

In your light I learn how to love.
In your beauty, how to make poems.
You dance inside my chest
where no one sees you,
but sometimes I do, and that
sight becomes this art.

Jalaluddin Rumi (1207-73) was a mystic Sufi poet of the 13th century. He wrote in the Persian language and was one of the innovators at using the the rubai, or four-line poem which is indigenous to the Persian language.

Rumi wrote short poems that echo with the silence and love and great cheerfulness they spring from, much as birdsong deepens the quiet and, it may be, quickens the growing of a meadow. All the natural phenomena come within the gamut of his imagery; at times he seems to identify his mystical moods with the changing face of nature about him. Rumi draws images of surprising beauty out of his own spiritual consciousness, establishing an irrefutable claim to be the great mystical poet Islam, and perhaps the world, has ever produced.

The translator, Coleman Barks, has also translated and published various esoteric poets like the Sixth Dalai Lama, Rigdzin Tsangyang Gyatso and Jalaluddin Rumi, and these works are currently available from Pilgrims Book House, Kathmandu.

The Secrets of the Self (Asrar-I-Khudi)

by Sheikh Muhammad Iqbal. Translated by Reynold A Nicholson.

This celebrated poem by Pakistan's philosopher-poet and political leader, Muhummad Iqbal (1877-1938), caused a sensation among the Muslims of British India when it was first published in 1915, due to its egocentric character.

"In the Asrar, Iqbal emphasizes the importance of the ego and its self-affirmation; he believes that the morality of the individual and of the nation are determined by the answer they give to the question: 'What is the nature of the ego?' This emphasis is intended in part to counterbalance a certain tendency in oriental thought and spirituality to stress the unitary point of view, from which the individual exists only on an illusory plane. Iqbal considered this to be a major cause of the fatalistic passivity..., resulting in the decline in their [Muslim] religious values and cultural and political fortunes during recent centuries at the expense of those of the West." - Q M Haq / M I Waley, Allama Sir Muhammad Iqbal: Poet-philosopher of the East (British Museum)

Stallion on a Frozen Lake: Love Songs of the Sixth Dalai Lama

Translated by Coleman Barks

If I could meditate as deeply
on the sacred lake as I do
on you, I would clearly be
enlightened in this lifetime!

The Sixth Dalai Lama, Rigdzin Tsangyang Gyatso, born in 1683, was a rebel in his own times. His death has remained a mystery and we are unsure whether it took place in 1706 or 1746. A much loved poet and tantric master, he lived beyond his contemporaries' concept of identity. Shrouded in legend, he turned out to be a unique sort of holy man. He seems to have officially given back the ascetic pledge he took and live in the Potala disguised as a layman. He wore rings and blue silk, instead of the red and yellow attire of the monks. Whatever the truth may be, the diverse powers that make up the Sixth Dalai Lama are intensely definable. They confuse normal concepts of identity, and they make his poetry very alive to the touch.

His poems reflect not only his meditative lineage but the mystery and passion of sexual love as well. The songs are modelled on anonymous folk songs, sung in a lilting manner. They treat real love problems in uncomplicated images and natural, passionate language. They are creations, which remind the reader of some of the greatest romantic poets. These songs were sung in the streets of Tibet until banned by the occupying Chinese authorities.

The translator, Coleman Barks, also translated other esoteric poets such as Lalla and Rumi, and these translations are also available from Pilgrims Book House.

Empty Moon: Belly Full. Haiku from India and Nepal

by John Brandi

Using the medium of haiku poetry, John Brandi, poet, essayist and passionate traveller, shares his experiences, insights and observations from his years on the road as a traveler in India and Nepal.

"These poems ring true, ring changes on our life as planet people, caught in our inner bureaucracies of the soul, found in the very lostness we once feared. Turn off your computer, stop the car and muffle the cell phone: find something, right here in your hand." -- Willima J Higginson, The Haiku Handbook

"John Brandi has eyes that really see; he can pile up precise descriptions of people, colors, smells, actions and feelings until the mind is staggered with the precision and truth of his vision." -- Moritz Thomsen, The Saddest Pleasure

John Brandi is the author of A Question of Journey (essays on travel in India, Nepal, Thailand and Bali). His books of poetry include Heartbeat Geography, Visits to the City of Light and Weeding the Cosmos. He formerly received a National Endowment for the Arts for Poetry, as well as numerous awards for teaching poetry in rural schools from Alaska to Mexico. He lives beside the Rio Grande in New Mexico. - Postscript.

"There is more mortality in John Brandi's work now. It's not simply the light of Asia that's informing these poems. Brandi, it's true, has been an open-roader for much of his life and like his two great forebearers, Whitman and Neruda, has named the minute peculiars, the details of his sojournings in Alaska, South and Central America, Asia and New Mexico, infusing them with the whole gamut of feelings -- compassionate, mischievous, loving and righteous. It's what made his poetry one of the solid bodies of work that's emerged from the North American West since the 60's. In this book one also perceives a deepening inward..." -- Jack Hirschman

John Brandi, poet, painter, photographer, traveller, and itinerant teacher, has authored several dozen books, including Heartbeat Geography, Weeding the Cosmos, Stone Garland, Relections in a Lizard's Eye, A Question of Journey, and Empty Moon/Belly Full (the latter two books also published by Pilgrims Publishing). Brandi formerly received a National Endowment for the Arts for Poetry, as well as numerous awards for teaching poetry in rural schools from Alaska to Mexico.
