Shikari Sahib

by Peter Byrne

Jim Corbett (1875-1955) was one of the 20th century's greatest hunters and later a noted conservationist. Responding to the pleas of the hill people of Kumaon, northern India, who were being preyed on by man-eating tigers and leopards, Corbett hunted down at least a dozen man-eaters between 1906 and 1941. It was estimated that the total number of men, women and children killed by these 12 man-eaters before Corbett ended their reign of terror was 1,500.

In this book, the author, Peter Byrne, himself a hunter and conservationist, personally investigates the Corbett legends and gives us an in-depth look at Corbett's great man-eating tiger and leopard hunts. Byrne visits the actual sites of Corbett's most famous hunts, and interviews people who knew Corbett as well as relatives of the victims of the man-eaters.

The book features many photographs of the man-eating tiger country of north India and western Nepal, and in particular memorable and illuminating photos taken at the sites of Corbett's dramatic hunts.

***Mountaineering***

All 14 Eight-Thousanders

by Reinhold Messner. Translated by  Audrey Salkeld.

On 16 October 1986, Reinhold Messner successfully reached the 8511 summit of Lhotse in Nepal. With that he became the first man to stand on all 14 eight-thousand metre summits in the world -- an unbelievable achievement and a sensation in mountaineering history.

What motivated Messner to be so dedicated in pursuit of his goal, despite unbelievable hardships, to keep confronting danger and death, loneliness and self-doubt? What thoughts and feelings occupied him when faced with his inner self and the highest mountains of the world? The answers to these questions can be found in this book.

You will disconver Reinhold Messner's quite individual method of tackling unusual problems. You will get a glimpse of the preparation, organisation and running of an expedition, and share special moments on the summits of the eight-thousanders. You will get to know Reinhold Messner through sharing the day-to-day experiences of a climber who has pushed himself and Alpinism to new dimensions.

Annapurna, South Face

by Chris Bonnington

In 1970 Chris Bonnington and his team successfully battled up a seemingly impregnable face in the Himalayas. It was a magnificent triumph for mountaineering and good teamwork. Annapurna South Face tells how it was done.

"In the 1970s unconquered peaks were few and far between, so attention turned to climbing by more difficult or spectacular routes. This was technical climbing of a high order and Englishman Chris Bonnington's various expeditions were the best known examples of the craft. His book Annapurna South Face describes in detail the planning that goes into making a major expedition, the complicated logistics of the actual climb, and makes an authoritative account of a highly technical assault on a difficult face." - Hugh Finlay, Nepal (Lonely Planet)

"I am left... with a sense of wonder at this feat: of admiration for the men who dared and did it." - Lord Hunt, Sunday Times

"He writes as well as he climbs" - Times Literary Supplement

"This is a very good book indeed exciting, psychologically illuminating and honest and I read it entranced." - C P Snow, Financial Times

Climbing the Fish's Tail

by Wilfred Noyce

This is the record of a mountain expedition to Machhapuchhare (Nepali for "the Fish's Tail"). This mountain is so astonishing in its splendour and beauty that the author could not resist the temptation of describing it and the result is this book - written in a lucid and fascinating style.

The author's insatiable passion for the mountains and his extraordinary sensitivity to their grandeur expresses itself in all the chapters and a small poem in which he says:
Let me go climb those virgin snows,
leave the dark stain of man behind.

An unputdownable book for all climbers and mountain lovers.

"Provides an account of the 1957 ascent of the Machhapuchhare (or 'fish tail'), the mountain in the Annapurna group which overlooks Pokhara. The expedition got within 150 feet of the summit, but had to turn back because of bad weather and an ice field above them." - John Whelpton, Nepal (Clio Press)

The Goddess of Turquoise: The Way to Cho Oyu

by Reinhold Messner

"Mt. Cho-Oyu is the second peak above the 8,000-metre in Nepal to have been conquered by climbers following the conquest of the world's tallest peak - Mt. Sagarmatha [Mt Everest] - on May 29, 1953." -- The Rising Nepal

Mt. Cho-Oyu is known as the "Goddess of Turquoise" in the Tibetan language.

The author of this book, Reinhold Messner, is one of the world's most famous mountaineers. He was the first to successfully climb all the world's 8,000 metre mountains. His sensational climbs include the first ascent (with partner Peter Habeler) of Everest without the use of bottled oxygen and the first solo ascent of Nanga Parbat.

This book systematically lists over 600 peaks which attain heights of over 20,000 feet, along with their height, exact location and exhaustive lists of the expeditions which have successfully scaled their heights. The text is accompanied by dozens of dramatic black and white and colour photographs of the most famous peaks and foldout panorama photographs and profile diagrams of these immense ranges.

The Kangchenjunga Adventure

by Francis S Smythe

This is the story of one of the first attempts to climb that great Himalayan peak, Kangchenjunga. Known to local people as 'The Five Treasures of Snow', Kangchenjunga, which rises to 28,208 ft., is the third highest mountain in the world.

Seen from afar it seems to float serenely above the clouds. But to reach the summit means a death-defying battle against the elements, biting cold winds, barrages of snow and, worst of all, terrifying avalanches that sweep constantly across entire faces of the mountain.

Francis Sydney Smythe mobilized this expedition which marched through tropical Sikkim into 'Unknown Nepal' by way of Kang La, a 16,000 ft. pass and then set up a base camp, ready for the attempt.

Kangchenjunga: Guardian of the Eastern Himalaya

Photographs: Tim Hauf. Text: Conger Beasley, Jr.

Kangchenjunga is one of the most mysterious mountains in the world. It was not scaled until 1955, two years after Everest, and even then the party of British mountaineers who climbed it stopped short of the summit in deference to the wishes of the chogyal (the spiritual leader) of Sikkim, who feared that the presence of a human foot might violate its holiness and sanctity.

The length of Kangchenjunga's stupendous bulk is capped by five peaks, which loom over eastern Nepal and western Sikkim like a palm held up in perpetual blessing. The people who live there believe Kangchenjunga (literally Five Treasures of the Eternal Snow) to be their patron deity, protecting them from harm. According to legend, the five peaks are the repository of the five holy items deemed essential for life: minerals, grain, salt, weapons, and the holy scriptures.

In their fourth coffeetable book collaboration, photographer Tim Hauf and writer Conger Beasley, Jr. blend their superb talents to capture the legendary mountain and the remote terrain of the eastern Himalaya; Hauf, with his astounding photos of the face and texture of the mountains, Beasley with his insight showcases the people, history, flora and fauna.

Lost in the Himalayas

by James Scott & Joanne Robertson

In the Himalayan winter, without food or shelter, a human being is not expected to live longer than a week. James Scott lasted 43 days. He survived cold, hunger, isolation and despair, hanging on to the dwindling hope that a search team might find him, or that he could crawl out when the snow thawed. He should never have made it out of the mountains alive.
This is the incredible story of his survival, of how he focussed his thought to sustain hope until he was rescued.
It is also the story of another struggle, of the search kept alive by his sister, Joanne Robertson. Fighting disbelief and the difficulties of working with government officials in a foreign country, she refused to give up hope, systematically eliminating every possibility - long past the point where anyone expected to find much more than James' body.
Lost in the Himala
yas is a story about hope, endurance, survival and the human spirit.

Nepal Himalaya

by H W Tilman

Nepal Himalaya is a book from the days of great travel writing. It is a witty, ironic and romantic description of three journeys made in 194950, just before the downfall of the Rana regime, to the Langtang, Annapurna and Everest regions.

"Excellent read... an often amusing account of some early trekking expeditions together with the odd mountain assault which had, by today's standards, an amazing lack of advance planning." - Hugh Finlay, Nepal (Lonely Planet)

"Chatty account of the first mountaineering reconnaissance of Nepal in 194951... Tilman was one of the century's great adventurers and his writing remains fresh and witty." - David Reed, Nepal (Rough Guides)

Round Kangchenjunga: A Narrative of Mountain Travel and Exploration

by Douglas W Freshfield

Kangchenjunga, the slumbering giant of the eastern Himalaya -- its mighty, gigantic walls practically insurmountable from all sides -- sits like a brooding god on the borders of eastern Tibet, Sikkim and Nepal, unwilling to be desecrated. In 1899 this mountain, though clearly visible from the British Raj hill station of Darjeeling, was geographically completely unknown. Surrounding it, giant bastions of glaciers, outer guardian peaks and hidden valleys were shrouded in mists as thick as those that rose from the twisted and impenetrable rhododendron forests on its lower southern flanks.

Following in the footsteps of the 1883 mountaineering party of W W Graham, which after climbing an 18,000 foot peak, was forced to return to Darjeeling after only a week, Douglas Freshfield set out with his party in 1899. He was to be the first mountaineer to examine the great western face of Kangchenjunga, rising from the Kangchenjunga Glacier.

This volume is the story of an exciting, often dangerous and frequently frustrating journey of exploration to discover the lower and upper ramparts of this great mountain. It is the epic story of adventurers seeking to open up a path to the base of the mountain for future climbers and to seek a pathway to the abode of the Gods.

Douglas W Freshfield (1845-1934), a British barrister, mountaineer, writer, poet and geographer, was one of the greatest mountain explorers of any age. A prominent figure in the Royal Geographical Society, Freshfield is considered to be one of the most scholarly and sensitive mountain writers. His books include Exploration of the Caucasus, Round Kangchenjunga and Below the Snow Line.

"The most valuable mountain exploration ever carried out in the Sikkim Himalayas was that of Mr Freshfield's party in 1899... It [the book] is indeed an extraordinarily accurate work." -- F S Smythe, The Kangchenjunga Adventure

"This dangerous and exciting circuit of Kangchenjunga is a classic of mountain exploration." -- W R Neate, Mountaineering and its Literature

Round Kangchenjunga
, published in 1903, and adorned with admirable photographs of Signor Vittorio Sella, is a masterpiece literature, helpful in its technique, illuminating in its topography, and a little pleasantly malicious." -- The Times, London

Spiti, Adventures in the Trans-Himalaya

by Harish Kapadia

"Spiti, which literally means the 'middle land', is a grey and barren landscape situated to the north of Shimla, in the State of Himachal Pradesh. It is the trans-Himalayan land with Tibet to its east, Ladakh to its north, Kullu to its west and Kinnaur guarding the south. This book is based on author's several visits to Spiti, exploring its valleys and climbing peaks. It concentrates most valuably on the wealth of extremely rewarding summits, unknown passes and remote valleys, which have been hitherto neglected due to lack of information or difficulty of access. Complete with several maps, illustrated with many photographs, tables of road distances and trek routes this book is the only available exhaustive reference work on this area."

The author began his career of climbing and trekking in the Western Ghats, near Bombay. He has been editor of the Himalayan Journal for many years

True Summit

by David Roberts

The first conquest ever made of an 8,000 metre peak was on June 1950 when a French team reached the summit of Annapurna in the Himalayas. Maurice Herzog, the leader, became a national hero and his account of the expedition, Annapurna, remains to this day the best-selling mountaineering book ever.

But the book left much unsaid. Far from the glorious solidarity portrayed by Herzog, the team was riven with dissent. In place of Maurice Herzog's idealised version of the conquest, David Roberts reveals in True Summit the real story of the Annapurna expedition. The triumph came at a heavy cost: Herzog lost all his fingers and toes to frostbite and fellow climber, Louise Lachenal, lost all his toes.

When Men and Mountains Meet: Explorers of the Western Himalayas, 1820-1875

by John Keay

Here is a classic and riveting account of the 19th Century explorations of the Himalayan and Karakoram ranges. This was the period of the Great Game of rivalry between British India and Russia. It was the time when Central Asia beckoned to adventurers and explorers as a domain of vast riches and fabled cities unvisited since the times of Marco Polo, blocked only by the towering Western Himalayas, a seemingly inpenetrable barrier between British India and Central Asia and Inner China beyond. For over 50 years, beginning with the great mountaineer Moorcroft, the explorers attempted to find a way across these huge mountains.

***White Water Adventure***

White Water Nepal

by Peter Knowles and David Allardice

Nepal is a small country, the size of Idaho, or of Austria and Switzerland put together, but a huge country in terms of its diversity: from the highest peaks Mt. Everest on earth to steamy jungle. Straddling the Himalayas, Nepal forms a boundary and meeting point between the Indian subcontinent and the high plateau land of Asia.

It's a country where, away from the few roads, villagers and towns could be straight out of a medieval novel, with a simple life style enriched by deep cultural beliefs and joyful festivals. In modern terms it,s a poor, exotic, third world country, with difficult mountain terrain, too many people, little fertile land, and lots of development problems. But it's also a country with a proud country with a proud history, a sense of unity, fine friendly people, a country with few roads, but wonderful rivers!

This book is the product of many people's input, ideas and help of many paddlers.

"Anyone who is seriously interested in rafting and kayaking,.. should get hold of.. White Water Nepal... It has detailed information on river trips, 60 maps, river profiles and hydrographs, plus advice on equipment and health -- in short, all the information a prospective river runner could want." -- Hugh Finlay et al.
