Literary History of Sanskrit Buddhism

by G K Nariman

Sanskrit Buddhist literature embodies many texts which date from an antiquity as respectable as any of the Pali Buddhist literary texts. But though Pali Buddhism is studied vigorously, Sanskrit Buddhist literature is looked upon with suspicion. As a result, no systematic history of Buddhist literature in Sanskrit has appeared.

The Literary History of Sanskrit Buddhism
intends to fill this gap in our knowledge of Sanskrit Buddhist literature. Divided into thirteen chapters, it gives detailed historical information on the works of Asvaghosa, Nagarjuna, Aryadeva, Asanga, Vasubandhu and other Buddhist scholars, both ancient and medieval. The author has marshalled every available source, including Tibetan, Chinese and Japanese translations of the Sanskrit texts and their exegetical expositions.

An American Passion Play

by India Jones

An American Passion Play is a satirical representation of a culture that has been very much in existence since the early sixties in the United States of America. It is in truth the expression of those who wanted a freedom of expression as guaranteed in the American Constitution. This freedom includes the practice of the religion of ones choice and the practice of the rituals therein. It reflects upon the use of certain substances that have been in use for centuries by almost all societies as a means of certain substances that have been in use for centuries by almost all societies as a means of communication with our origins.

These feelings and emotions still hold good today and the continuing fight against draconian laws which date back to a different era still goes on. This does not mean to say that the author or publishers wish to misguide the youth of today. This is simply a statement of things as they are. It is a plea for us to go back to more natural ways of life, living in harmony and understanding with all forms of life on this planet.

India Jones is the son of Indiana Jones and the Maharani of Sharadpur. He was educated in India, Washington, DC, and Paris, France, graduating from the Sorbonne at the age of fourteen and receiving a doctorate in philosophy at the age of sixteen. Upon graduation, he returned to India to live and study with his guru, Hakim Kutta, high in the Himalayan range near Tibet. India lives in California when he is not in India.

A Treatise on Sudraka's Mrcchakatika

by Prakaschandra Chakrabarti

This book gives a detailed critical introduction to Mrcchakatika, a popular and widely translated Sanskrit play.
Mrcchakatika is based on the elegant love story of Carudatta and Vasantasena with other subplots -- the romantic episode of Sarvilaka and Madanika. and a political revolution against a tyrant ruler. The characters, so living, real and lovable, represent manifold strata of Indian society right from kings to thieves.
Mrcchakatika concerns the eternal conflict between good and evil. Man is as much responsible for his suffering as he is for removing it. When justice is rendered difficult for want of evidence, the tyrant king unleashes cruelty on the poor and honest, everyone from beggar to whore is threatened for life, right thinking people unite to bring about change by replacing the tyrant with an upright and brave leader. A whore's true love for the city's most handsome and admired man with impeccable character is redeemed.
