Hindu Holidays and Ceremonials
by Rai Bahadur B A Gupte
-- What are the origins of Hindu festivals and ceremonies?
-- How have the deities earned their reputations?
This book attempts to provide all the answers. In fact, it
is an almost complete anthology of the holidays, festivals, fasts
and feasts that are celebrated throughout the Indian subcontinent.
Hindu Holidays and Ceremonials was written as a written
ethnological record of Hindu holidays and ceremonials, including
"dissertations on the origins, folklore and symbols";
but it also serves as a handy dictionary regarding these same
topics.
The author, Rai Bahadur B A Gupte, worked closely with the
British Ethnography Survey of India and provided a lot of the
research material used by them during his tenure.
"These notes contain an immense amount of interesting
matter, and should prove useful to students of Indian folklore
and ceremonies."

Hindu Manners, Customs and Ceremonies
by Abbé J A Dubois
This book provides a fascinating and detailed description of
everyday Hindu society and religion its manners, customs,
institutions and ceremonies as existed in the early nineteenth
century in south India. Much of this detail helps us understand
Hinduism in today's India.
The author, Abbé Dubois, lived in India from 1792 to 1823.
He adopted Indian clothing and lifestyle, and devoted himself
to a long and thorough study of the life and character of the
Hindus. Despite being a Christian missionary, Dubois was remarkably
free from the theological prejudices of his day.
This reprint of the third and final edition of this classic work
will be welcomed by all readers who want to understand Hinduism
as it was and in many ways still is.
"This book is very valuable for the immense amount of information
it gives... For what might be regarded as the workaday world
of Hinduism... Information which no student can do without."
- Nirad C Chauduri, Hinduism (Oxford University Press)
"Though written with the bias of a Catholic priest toward
Hindu heathens, this is perhaps the most informative book on
early 19th century socio-religious customs. Dubois himself observed
most these customs in south India but his information on north
India is from other informants. Practices such as suttee (burning
of widows) have now been banned, but Dubois provides an eyewitness
account of many of them." - B K Gupta / D S Kharbas.
India (Clio Press)
"By rescuing from obscurity... Abbe Dubois's thirty years
of observation and research, Mr Beauchamp [the book's editor]
will place the life-work of that great missionary in its true
form before the world" - The Times
"Mr Beauchamp has done good service to the reading public...
by publishing a verbatim translation of Dubois' great work in
its revised form, elucidated by many excellent notes suggested
by the events of the last seventy years, and by the researches
of later writers, who have devoted their attention to the study
of the manners and the customs of the inhabitants of India."

Man and the Universe: Hindu Perspectives
by R. R. Pandey
Man and the Universe is an investigation of how man has
visualised his relation to the universe around him since his
appearance on earth. It deals comprehensively with man's search
for his roots and the true raison d'etre for his existence. Prof.
R. R. Pandey has provided us with an all-inclusive survey of
the invaluable material initially found in the Rigveda and later
refined by the various schools of thought that have developed
over the ages.
Prof. Pandey gives us an overview of different schools of philosophy
and takes us to the absolute extremes of Indian philosophical
thought from Shankara to Ramanujan who present conflicting conclusions
about the all-embracing reality and methods of attaining it.
Also incorporated in his survey are many modern Western conceptions
of reality, including the present 'Black Hole' theory and its
relation to ancient Indian thought.
From atheism to the other extreme of absolute devotion to a munificent
deity, this book surveys the alternative views suggested by the
sages of ages long past, trying to answer questions that have
puzzled man from time immemorial.
Born in 1942, Prof. Rewati Raman Pandey was educated at Allahabad
University where he was awarded MA (Phil) and DPhil. In 1972-74,
he undertook postdoctoral research at Munster and Hamburg Universities.

Modern Hinduism

Hinduism professes to regulate the Hindu's life in all its many
relations. It prescribes ceremonies attendant on his birth, his
early training, his food and its cooking, his style of dress

his death. It seeks to regulate not only private life but also
domestic and national relations.
Modern Hinduism, a classic work written at the turn of the
century, portrays the faith and rituals of Hinduism as practised
in northern India. This book covers in great detail the Hindu's

Popular Hinduism: The Religion of the Masses
by L S S O'Malley
India has been often described as a land of contrast, and nowhere
are the contrasts more marked than in Hinduism in which the crudest
idolater and the sublest philosopher feel equally at home!
The difference between the beliefs and practices of the cultured
classes and those of the masses are so great that they almost
seem to be differences of kind rather than of degree. In spite
of these great variations of belief and practice, there are also
some common characteristics. L S S O'Malley gives a brief outline
of both kinds of Hinduism in this authentic book.
"This volume is, for its size, remarkably full, fair and
accurate." -- Journal of Religion
"If the ordinary man prefers to base his judgement upon
reliable information instead upon second-hand prejudices, O'Malley's
book will serve him well." -- The Cambridge Review
"The man who wants to get a general idea of Hinduism as
it exists in India can hardly do better than read this unpretentious
but excellent book." -- Manchester Guardian
"A comprehensive survey of modern Hinduism, as it is practiced
by the masses of the people." -- Book Review Digest
'Mr. O'Malley has written with insight and sympathy. One or two
small inaccuracies of detail do not detract from the merit of
this excellent and fair-minded book.' --Times Literary

Kali's
Odiyya: A Shaman's Story of Initiation
by
Amarananda Bhairavan
This is a rare and exciting story of worship in an ancient
culture -- with secrets that have never before been revealed
and a world that most Westerners know nothing about. It tells
us of Shambu (as the author is known throughout the story) and
Sandhya, his partner, incarnated in a small Indian matriarchal
village formed around a Kali temple. As children they were chosen
to become servants of the Goddess Kali. Bhairavan writes of his
experiences of initiation into the world of Kali's Odiyya: shamans
of the goddess. We follow Shambu and Sandhya from their initiation,
through an exorcism, and through initiation into mystical sexuality.
We learn of Kundalini arousal and karma; we experience a funeral
celebration; we participate in the matriarchal transference of
power so that older men and women are free to pursue their search
for spirituality at the end of their life. We learn of the aghori,
the sorcerers who shape shift into the astral world, where Shambu
experiences his astral form as a being of light. We live with
Shambu and Sandhya for eight years of their magical lives, sharing
what they learn.
"A lovely and subtle book. Presented as a memoir of a young
East Indian boy's training by his aunt to become an 'odiyya',
a shaman in the service of the Goddess Kali, it is also carefully
designed to be a book of initiation for the reader. It presents
an increasingly complex view of the interrelationship between
the world and the psyche in a series of small bites, each clear
and responsible enough in itself... As a Jungian I was especially
impressed with how well Bhairavan treads the razor's edge between
symbolic and real. I recommend this book highly." -- Robin
Robertson, author of Jungian Archetypes and Your Shadow

Kumari: The Virgin Goddess
by Siddhi B Ranjitkar
Kumari Puja, or virgin worship, is an ancient feature of Asian
religions, dating back to at least the late Vedic period. Archaeological
evidence indicates that mother goddess have always occupied a
very significant position even in the religions of such ancient
civilisations as the Mohenjo-daro and Harappa.
In Nepal, the Living Goddess, Kumari, is regarded as a supreme
Tantric goddess--a common deity worshipped by both Hindus and
Buddhists. While Hindu Tantrics worship her as Durga Bhawani
or Taleju, Buddhist Tantrics worship her as Vajradevi. According
to a popular belief, Kumari possesses unlimited spiritual powers
and protects people from demons and evil spirits.
The Newars of Nepal devote a great deal of their devotion and
ritual activity to the worship of female divine force in its
multifarious forms but the most notable and unique feature of
their religion is the worship of Kumari, the living virgin goddess.
This handy, concise book presents the mysterious phenomenon of
the Living Goddess.

The Inner Life of Krishnamurti: Private Vision
and Perennial Wisdom
by Aryel Sanat
When Jiddu Krishnamurti (1895-1986) was fourteen, early Theosophists
proclaimed him the next messianic world leader and introduced
him to the ancient perennial wisdom. He was educated in Great
Britain and spent his life sharing insights around the world.
He became one of the greatest spiritual teachers of the twentieth
century. Among the millions he has influenced are the Dalai Lama,
Deepak Chopra, Joseph Campbell, Dr Jonas Salk, Henry Miller and
Aldous Huxley.
But Krishnamurti (K) was a revolutionary in the deepest sense.
For over sixty years he publicly eschewed belief systems and
presuppositions of any sort, including the esoteric systems of
the Thoesophists.
Aryel Sanat explodes myths at the heart of the controversies
surrounding this beloved and complex man. His meticulous research
reveals that, contrary to appearances, K's inner life was rich
in esoteric happenings. Privately, he never denied the existence
of his perennial "Masters", nor did he deny being a
vehicle for the manifestation of the Lord Maitreya or the Christ.
In fact, according to K, these inner realities were present every
day of his mature life and intimately related to his work.
The admittedly strange story that unfolds is critical for understanding
K's life and views. It is also essential to Buddhism, the teachings
of Gurdjieff, the perennial renaissance -- in fact, the whole
of contemporary spirituality.

Krishnamurti's Insight: An Examination of his Teachings on
the Nature of Mind and Religion
by Hillary Rodrigues
Krishnamurti (1895-1986) is internationally regarded as one of
the eminent religious figures of our time. Although publications
on his discourses abound, there have been few systematic analyses
of his thought. In this volume, Prof Hillary Rodrigues, a Religious
Studies scholar with particular sensitivity to Krishnamurti's
critique of traditional scholarship, presents a lucid analysis
of Krishnamurti's metaphysics.
After succinct, informative sections on Krishnamurti's remarkable
life, his legacy to humanity, and the unique manner in which
he conveyed his teachings, Rodrigues proceeds to examine Krishnamurti's
teachings on the nature of mind. Attending scrupulously to Krishnamurti's
own words, and with the aid of illustrative diagrams, the analysis
reveals that "total insight" is the pivotal event which
liberates the mind from the bondage of conditioning, to Truth
and genuine religion.
An important component of the study is its appraisal of existing
criticism of Krishnamurti and his ideas in the light of the analysis.
The book also points out similarities between Krishnamurti's
teachings and other religious philosophies, particularly Buddhism,
highlighting the singular nature of Krishnamurti's notion of
religion.
Hillary Rodrigues is Associate Professor and Chair of the Department
of Anthropology at the University of Lethbridge, Canada. He holds
a PhD in Religious Studies from McMaster University. He has travelled
extensively in the Americas, Europe and Asia, where he has conducted
years of field research on Eastern religions. Dr Rodrigues has
taught at a school based on Krishnamurti's educational philosophy
and has conducted research on Krishnamurti's teachings in Canada,
the United States and India.
"Rodrigues' work is a fine example of how this [the analysis
of Krishnamurti's teachings] should be done. It respects the
spirit and method of Krishnamurti's teachings without sacrificing
any of the care that scholarship requires." -- Graeme McQeen,
McMaster University

thought. The author has handled the material with dexterity and
insight." -- John Grimes, Studies in Religion

Krishnamurti: Two Birds on One Tree

From this book:
"There was Krishnamurti, the vessel of great revelation
from on high, but also Krishnamurti the man subject to his personal
conditioning, desires and needs.
It can be said that the ability to separate the inner or higher
Self from the lower self is a mark of spiritual development.
But the ability to bring the two parts together intentionally
and with freedom is a sign of divine wisdom and incarnation."

of this truly remarkable teacher." -- Jacob Needleman, PhD,

Mandala: The Mystical Diagram of Hinduism
by J R Santiago
You are on the threshold of an amazing discovery with this book.
It deals mainly with a form of worship, which has for a long
time remained secret, except for a few initiates.
In composition the mandala is simply a diagram with geometrical
patterns, but it is wholistic in approach, and deals with the
individual as well as the universal aspects of life. It is vast
in concept, it involves philosophy, science, technology and psychology
of the phenomenal universe and of life.
The mandala conceptual framework of creation can be compared
with the Big Bang theory. It is therefore a subject that will
interest physicists, cosmologists and anyone with scientific
or philosophical bent of mind.
This overview of mystical worship, intricate and complex, is
intriguing yet stimulating. As a spiritual model, simple in design,
the wisdom revealed by the mandala far exceeds expectations.

What Is Maya?
by Sister Devamata
How can we deny the existence and the testimony of our five senses?
What is so dreamlike about the world that we see, taste and touch?
How does one penetrate the veil of maya and see what lies
beyond?
Probably no part of the ancient Indian teaching is so difficult
for the Western mind to grasp as the notion of maya. In
addition to answering questions like these, this small book also
offers an insight into one of the most widely misunderstood of
all Indian philosophical concepts.

Benares: The Sacred City of the Hindus
by M A Sherring
Benares, Kashi or Varanasi -- this illustrious place of pilgrimage
and idealised nucleus of faith -- has been likened to Jerusalem
or Mecca. It is acknowledged throughout the world as a centre
of Hindu tradition and a seat of ancient learning. It is a city
where infinity and continuity, the past and present, live together.
There are few cities in the world of greater antiquity and none
that have so uninterruptedly maintained their ancient celebrity
and distinction.
This book, written just after the freedom struggle of 1857, offers
a piercing insight into the culture of Benares as seen through
the eyes of a European at that time.
The book will also tell you why this city has been for over two
and a half thousand years the pre-eminent sacred city of the
Hindus and why it has a primary status on the cultural map of
India.

Benares, The Sacred City: Sketches of Hindu Life and Religion
by E B Havell
Benares (or Varanasi) represents the essential quality of India.
Here is India's life and drama and its unyielding brutality.
But here too, undiluted and almost tangible, is the mysterious
and marvellous energy that has enticed and charmed so many foreigners
over the centuries.
This book, published originally in 1905, remains an almost flawless
guide to present-day Varanasi which has changed very little and
still retains its charisma for those who search for ancient India.
The book gives a lucid outline of Hindu ideas and religious practices.
It presents the innovative and aesthetic aspects of Indian religions,
which can be better observed in few other places than in this
sacred city and its neighbourhood.
This book will introduce the reader to the extraordinary cultural
and spiritual richness of Varanasi and as such will be more rewarding
than most travel books.

The Holy Mountain, being the Story of a Pilgrimage to Lake Manas
and of Initiation on Mount Kailash in Tibet
by Bhagwan Shri Hamsa
Bhagwan Shri Hamsa was born at Dhulia (India) on 15th June
1878. He was the younger son of Pandu Tatya Natekar, a well-known
lawyer. As he lost his mother at the age of four, his father
and elder brother took care of him. When Pandu Tatya learned
from an astrologer that his son would become a yogi, he forbade
him to read the Gita and found him a wife. He was married in
his sixteenth year.
But one day sitting on the banks of the Indrayani at Dehu, he
decided to renounce the world. He began to practice austerities;
he read the Guru-Charitra, the Life of Dattatreya - repeated
the Gayatri Mantram, took milk for his sole food.
After three and a half years of this life, he went on a pilgrimage
encircling the whole of India, and visited once every year Mount
Girnar, where the footsteps of Dattatreya are shown to pilgrims.
Then in 1908 he made the pilgrimage to Mount Kailash, which he
describes in this fascinating and mysterious book.
A long introduction by the famous Irish poet and mystic, Y B
Yeats, precedes the main text.

Mount Kailash and the Wonder Lake
by P C Bodh
In a far corner of western Tibet rises the awe-inspiring snowy
peak of Mount Kailash. To Hindu and Buddhist pilgrims this is
Tibet's sacred mountain. It is the "throne of the gods"
where this world and the eternal unite and where every aspect
of the landscape has a divine nature.
For thousands of years pilgrims have come here to pay homage.
They chant mantras, spin prayer wheels, worship at shrines and
perform the ancient ritual of circumambulation (walking around
the mountain).
This book is the record of the author's own pilgrimage to Mt
Kailash and of his feelings and fantasies as he traverses the
barren wastelands of the Himalayas and the Tibetan plateau en
route for Kailash. He depicts his fellow pilgrims and others
met along the way. Using poetry and photographs, he interweaves
his own story with the age-legends associated with this holy
haven above the clouds.

Temple of The Setu and Rameswaram
by N Vanamamalai Pilli
Rameswaram is an island in Tamil Nadu state in southeastern India.
It is part of Adam's Bridge, a chain of coral reef islands connecting
India and Sri Lanka. According to Hindu legend, this bridge (or
setu in Sanskrit) was built to transport the god Rama
as he crossed to Sri Lanka to rescue his wife Sita from the demon
Ravanna.
On this island is a greatly venerated shrine, the Temple of Rameswaram,
built in the 17th century. This is said to be built on the site
of Rama's footprints left during his epic journey. The temple
is perhaps the finest example of Dravidian architecture.
This book is a detailed guide to the island and its celebrated
temple.

The Sadhs
by W L Allison
Who are the Sadhs and what do they believe in?
Spread out across parts of northern and central India is a
very little-known and interesting religious sect known as the
Sadhs.
The Sadhs date back about four hundred years. Outwardly Hindu,
the group's tenets vary greatly from orthodox Hinduism, and it
draws its beliefs from several other religions and cults, including
Christianity.
The Sadhs shun luxuries. Their religious buildings are devoid
of furniture, religious symbols, rugs, ornaments, or any other
similar items. Some have compared the Sadhs to the Quakers or
to the Amish.
Originally published in 1935 in the "Religious Life of
India" series, this fascinating study of the Sadhs was written
by the missionary, W. L. Allison, of the American Presbyterian
Mission, Gwalior, India.

Secrets of Spiritual Life (Intuitively Apprehended) -
407 Sutras
by Dr Mohan Singh
The true spiritual life as set forth by the author is the
Vedic supreme intuitive consciousness. Vedic intuitive consciousness
is often misunderstood. It is not a form of "intuition"
as understood by modern philosophy, nor a form of intellectual
sympathy, nor a form of sense perception, nor a form of instinct
that has become conscious. It is not a nature mysticism or ritual
mysticism or mere primitive mythology.
Rather it is a total complex multidimensional, interpenetrating,
correspondential consciousness which can be apprehended only
intuitively, by identifying oneself with it, approaching it with
a believing soul and living it oneself.
Dr Singh expresses this consciousness understood intuitively
in 407 "sutras", terse, direct, precise and simple
aphorisms, each of which make the intellect struggle with the
unique synthesis that is presented to it. Dr Singh's intensity
of expression compressed in these sutras radiate light richly
and multidimensionally.
The use of sutras represents a new method of approach to a subject
bristling with mystical secrets and subtleties.

Tantravarttika: A Commentary on Sabara's Bhasya
on the Purvamimamsa Sutras of Jaimini
Translated by Ganganatha Jha
This major work is a commentary on Sabara's Bhasya,
which is itself another commentary on the Purvamimamsa Sutras
of Jaimini.
The Purva Mimamsa is one of the six orthodox systems of Hindu
philosophy. "Purva Mimamsa stresses study of the Vedas
[Hindu sacred texts] as the source of instruction for human beings,
an emphasis which led them to develop sophisticated theories
of language and methods for textual interpretation," writes
Associate Professor James G Lichtefeld. The Purva Mimamsa sets
forth rules for interpreting the Vedas, which are seen
as providing injunctions to ritual action. The ritual action
if properly performed maintains the harmony of the world and
advances the performer along his spiritual path.
Jaimini (2nd century BC) founded Purva Mimamsa with his magnum
opus, Purvamimamsa Sutras. The Bhasya, a major
commentary on the latter was written by Sabara (1st century BC)
and in turn a great interpretation of the Bhasya was written
by the great thinker and exponent of the Purva Mimamsa system,
Kumarila Bhatta (7th century AD). This was the Tantravarttika.
