A Guide to Sarnath
by B Majumdar. Introduction by Rao Bahadur K N Dikshit.
Among the places in India of interest to Indian and foreign
tourists and pilgrims, Sarnath must surely rank near top of the
list.
Located a few kilometres from Varanasi, the holiest city of the
Hindus, in Uttar Pradesh, northern India, Sarnath is the spot
where Buddhism first saw the light of day. Here in the beautiful
Deer Park is where the Buddha preached his First Sermon. Tucked
away amongst mango groves, the Deer Park still preserves the
peaceful charm that it had on that day when Buddha first expounded
his solution to the mystery of life to his first five followers.
This guidebook is a mine of information on the religious, historical
and artistic background and takes you on a guided tour around
all the monuments and the Museum of Archaeology.
After travelling so far to see Sarnath, you owe it to yourself
to really understand what you are seeing.

Temple of The Setu and Rameswaram
by N Vanamamalai Pilli
Rameswaram is an island in Tamil Nadu state in southeastern India.
It is part of Adam's Bridge, a chain of coral reef islands connecting
India and Sri Lanka. According to Hindu legend, this bridge (or
setu in Sanskrit) was built to transport the god Rama
as he crossed to Sri Lanka to rescue his wife Sita from the demon
Ravanna.
On this island is a greatly venerated shrine, the Temple of Rameswaram,
built in the 17th century. This is said to be built on the site
of Rama's footprints left during his epic journey. The temple
is perhaps the finest example of Dravidian architecture.
This book is a detailed guide to the island and its celebrated
temple.

Sikkim: A Traveller's Guide
Text by Arundhati Ray. Photographs and essays by Sujoy Das.
Sandwiched between Bhutan and Nepal on the eastern border of
India, Sikkim has always lured travellers--whether trekkers,
pilgrims, botanists, or just people who want a serene break
from routine. Photographer Sujoy Das, who fell early under the
spell of Sikkim, has been documenting the land over the last
two decades and provides rare pictures of its people, mountains,
and barren plateaus. Arundhati Ray covers all that a visitor
needs to know in order to travel here. In a wonderfully storytelling
style, peppered with anecdotes and folk tales, she provides the
essential information for any visitor. Together with Das's evocative
and perceptive essays about his many journeys in Sikkim, these
make this book more than just a guide: it offers a complete travel
experience. The book also includes a special section on trekking
routes with insider tips and maps.
Paperback. 159 pages. Art paper. Colour photographs.
