Folk Festivals of Mithila
by Dr Ram Dayal Rakesh
Mithila was an ancient north Indian kingdom that flourished
from the 9th to the 3rd centuries BC. This region is now divided
between northern Bihar (India) and the Nepali Terai and foothills.
Mithila has its own language and a unique culture (including
a bold, dramatic style of women's painting). It also is a place
of great religious importantance for Hindus. Its capital, Janakpur,
is where in the great Hindu epic, the Ramayana, Sita,
the incarnation of Lakshmi, was born and was married to Rama,
the god Vishnu in mortal form. At any time in the year Janakpur
is charged with religious fervour with crowds of singing, clapping
Hindu pilgrims, with new shrines being inaugurated, with religious
services being broadcast on loudspeakers, and with numerous festivals.
This book is a study of this fascinating aspect of a fascinating
city.
