The dominant notes of Indian love poetry are caught here vividly in the poems of Laurence Hope, the pen name of Adela Florence Nicolson (1865-1904), a remarkable woman poet of British India, who lived and loved in Baluchistan and Central India and came to love India and its traditions.

Her poems borrow inspiration, images and symbols from the poets of the North-West Frontier of India and the Sufi poets of Persia and have never been bettered since this book first appeared in 1902.

The lavish illustrations and decorations accompanying the poems are in the Art Nouveau style.

Orientalist, linguist, ethnologist, prolific author and member of the Royal Geographic Society, he was one of the most remarkable and controversial men of his century who railed against the 'immodest modesty, cant and hypocrisy of his era.
