The People of Tibet

by Sir Charles Bell

Sir Charles Bell was the British political officer for Sikkim, Bhutan and Tibet in the early part of the 20th century, and spent in all nearly twenty years in Tibet.
From his position in Tibet, Sir Charles was in a rare position to be able to observe the culture and way of life of the Tibetan people. At a time when old ways of Tibet have almost vanished under a so-called modernisation programme and Chinese political control, it is all the more important that such works be preserved for posterity.
An immense amount of detail concerning every aspect of Tibetan life, both in Lhasa and in country areas, has been recorded by Sir Charles. He describes in detail the people from nobility to peasants, their clothing, food, habits, festivals, etiquette and even amusements.
For anyone interested in Tibet's ancient or modern periods, this very informative narrative will be an indispensable guide. It will provide a wealth of background information to entice the reader to find out more about this magical and mysterious land.
"This is a classic work which no student of Tibet's social history can afford to ignore. It is based on the author's twenty years' experience of Tibet and presents a portrait of the whole spectrum of society ranging from the nobility at the top down through the traders, herdsmen and peasants to beggars and robbers at the bottom. The life of women and children is also described and there are chapters on Tibetan food, drinking and smoking, etiquette, and Tibetan games and amusements." - John Whelpton, Tibet (Clio Press)

Rhythms of a Himalayan Village

by Hugh R Downs

Splendid photographs, quotes and text to capture the life of the Buddhist Sherpa community of Gompa Zhung in northeastern Nepal, revealing a world where the sacred and secular coexist in harmony. It is an unparalleled portrait of one of the last remaining cultures where art and religion are integrated in daily life, adroitly capturing the graceful spirit of a remarkable people.
"Extraordinarily sensitive" - David Reed, Nepal (Rough Guides)
"Sensitive evocation of Sherpa life" - Kerry Moran, Nepal Handbook (Moon Publications)
"This interpretation of Sherpa religion consists of black-and-white photographs with a descriptive text, and extracts from the Buddhist scriptures and from works on Buddhism. Topics highlighted include the Sherpa's general culture and the Mani-Rimdu ritual, monastery life, the production of books, woodblock prints and paintings, and scenes from funeral rituals as described in the Tibetan Book of the Dead. The author's 'committed' approach contrasts strongly with that of Sherry Ortner in Sherpas through their Rituals." - John Whelpton, Nepal (Clio Press)
