Buddhism and Lamaism
by J E Ellam
Buddhism and Lamaism gives a brief account of the origin
of Buddhism, the specific teachings of the Buddha Gautama Sakyamuni
and Lamaism. The author examines the historical links between
Buddhism and Lamaism, and explores how, at a later stage, witchcraft
and magic emerged and departed in many ways from the comparative
simplicity of the Buddha's teachings.
Ellam also underlines the contradictions between Tibetan beliefs
and those of other Buddhist countries. He goes into the esoteric
aspects of the mystical Mahayana teachings, so long concealed
from outsiders by suspicion and brute force. The book is based
on a first-hand study of the subject which extended over many
years, first in the Southern Buddhist countries, and then in
Tibet itself.

Delog: Journey to Realms Beyond Death
by Delog Dawa Drolma
The Tibetan word 'delog' refers to one who has crossed the
threshold of death and returned to tell about it. For Delog Dawa
Drolma, a woman renowned as one of the great realisation holders
of Vajrayana Buddhism in this century, being a delog meant that
she lay without any sign of breath, pulse or warmth for five
days. During that time the link between her mind and her consciousness
journeyed to other realms of experience. What she saw then, recounted
in these pages, engendered in her a limitless compassion for
sentient beings. She experienced the almost unimaginable contrast
between existence in the pure display of enlightened mind and
existence within samsanic delusion and ignorance.
'The delog experience is extraordinary, marvellous, even within
the esoteric context of Tibetan schools of Vajrayana Buddhism.
Yet Delog Dawa Drolma's account has the power and immediacy of
direct experience, and I trust that those who read it will find
that the phenomena of the realms correspond to aspects of their
own mind's experience. May her words inspire the higher spiritual
attainment, may they guide whoever reads them to the dominions
of the victorious ones." -- His Eminence Chagdud Tulku

The Myth of Freedom and the Way of Meditation
by Chogyam Trungpa
Freedom is generally thought of as the ability to achieve goals
and satisfy desires. But what are the sources of these goals
and desires? If they arise from ignorance, habitual patterns,
and negative emotions -- psychologically destructive elements
that actually enslave us -- is the freedom to pursue them true
freedom or just a myth?
In this book, Chögyam Trungpa explores the meaning of freedom
in the profound context of Tibetan Buddhism. He shows how our
attitudes, preconceptions, and even our spiritual practices can
become chains that bind us to repetitive patterns of frustration
and despair. He also explains the role of meditation in bringing
into focus the causes of frustration and in allowing these negative
forces to become aids in advancing toward true freedom.
Trungpa's unique ability to express the essence of Buddhist teachings
in the language and imagery of contemporary American culture
makes this book one of the most immediately available sources
for the meaning of the Buddhist doctrine ever written.
'If you already have your copy of Trungpa Rinpoche's Cutting
Through Spiritual Materialism, you will want to get this

psychology and meditative practice of Tibet, this book is a masterful
introduction by itself.' -- Journal of Transpersonal Psychology

Ngondro Commentary: Instructions for the Concise Preliminary
Practices of the New Treasure of Dudjom. Compiled from the Teachings
of His Eminence Chagdud Tulku
by Chagdud Khadro. Compiled by Jane Tromge.
The ngondro practices in Tibetan Buddhism establish the foundation
for the entire Vajrayana path -- they are as fundamental to the
practitioner's development as the alphabet is to the written
language. Among the preliminaries of the various lineages, the
Dudjom Tersar Ngondro of the Nyingma tradition is possibly
the most concise. Written and then concealed in the eighth century,
by Padmasambhava (Guru Rinpoche), it was intended for these degenerate
times when few people have leisure to practice. His Holiness
Dudjom Jigdrai Yeshe Dorje, from whom His Eminence Chagdud Tulku
had the excellent fortune to receive these teachings, clarified
the text and taught it widely.
The Dudjom Tersar Ngondro is an extremely powerful practice for
turning the mind toward dharma, for purifying obfuscations, and
for bringing forth the qualities of realisation. It enhances
devotion to the dharma and receptivity to the highest level of
teachings; the Great Perfection perspective can evolve from ngondro
itself. he Dudjom Tersar Ngondro -- succinct, unelaborated, and
grounded in guru yoga -- provides a superb means of opening the
door to the nature of mind.
"The essence of the Buddhadharma is realized most swiftly
through the practice of Dzogchen, the Great Perfection. Through
guru yoga, the life force of the ngondro, true understanding
of Dzogchen awakens in one's being. With a heart of pure samaya,
having practiced guru yoga as Chagdud Tulku Rinpoche's wife and
devoted student for more than seventeen years, Jane Tromge has
compiled here the essential points of his oral ngondro teachings
with the wish that the dharma flourish for generations to come."

P'howa Commentary: Instructions for the Practice of Consciousness
Transference as Revealed by Rigdzin Longsal Nyingpo
by Chagdud Khadro
P'howa is a Vajrayana Buddhist method by which one's consciousness
is intentionally transferred to a pure realm at the moment of
death. P'howa training enables one to approach death as a unique
opportunity for liberation from the cyclic existence rather than
as an experience of fear and uncertainty. In this book Chagdud
Khadro explains the process of dying, the steps involved in p'howa
training based on the hidden treasure text of the Buddhist meditation
master Ridzin Longsal Nyingpo, the means of accomplishing p'howa
at the time of death either for oneself or for others, and integrating
p'howa into one's daily meditation practice.
Chagdud Khadro is the wife of His Eminence Chagdud Tulku Rinpoche
and a lama of the Nyingma school of Tibetan Buddhism. Recognising
her signs of accomplishment in p'howa practice as well as her
ability to help others achieve signs, Rinpoche authorised her
to teach p'howa, which she has done in the United States, Europe,
South America, and Australia. She is developing p'howa support
groups among practitioners who make a commitment to assist each
other at the time of dying.
His Eminence Chagdud Tulku Rinpoche, a highly revered master
of the Nyingma tradition, has taught widely throughout the world
and has established many centres for the study and practice of
Vajrayana Buddhism. His main centre in North America is located
in Rigzin Ling in Junction City, California. He currently lives

Prajnaparamita in Tibetan Buddhism
by E Obermiller
This remarkable work has been called the most important of the
texts treasured by the Madhyamika and the very foundation of
Mahayana metaphysics.
These texts teach a non-systematic religious philosophy, fervent
in devotion and rich in poetic expression, centering on the notion
that all is emptiness.
The author analyses the doctrine of Prajnaparamita or "Transcendental
Wisdom." It is based on Tibetan exegetical literature and
is considered by learned Tibetan tradition to be the most important
in the following ways:
-- As a summary of the Prajnaparamita sutras; and
-- As the text containing the special theory of the marga or
the Path to the Attainment of Nirvana according to the Mahayanistic
viewpoint.
The author, E Obermiller (1901-1935), was an eminent Buddhist
scholar who studied at length those Indian and Tibetan commentaries
which are highly esteemed by learned Tibetan tradition and are
considered to contain the clearest and most thorough and complete
analysis of the subjects contained in the Abhisamayalamkara.

The Religion of Tibet
by Sir Charles Bell
This classic volume by Sir Charles Bell begins with an overview
of religion in Tibet before the advent of Buddhism. After familiarising
the reader with the pre-Buddhist Bon religion, he describes the
foundation of Buddhism in India by Gotama the Buddha. He details
the arrival of Buddhism in Tibet and depicts the struggle between
Bon and Indian Buddhism, the result being Tibetan Buddhism.
This work is an excellent introduction to Tibetan Buddhism for
newcomers and provides many new insights for those who are already
familiar with this religion.
Bell's knowledge of the subject is vast and carefully presented.
During his nineteen year stay in Tibet, the author consulted
unknown Chinese and Tibetan sources, in addition to the known
works on Tibet. He had the opportunity to consult the most authoritative
people in Tibet regarding his subject. The result of his labour

The Tibetan Book of the Dead, or the After-Death Experiences
on the Bardo Plane
by W Y Evans-Wentz. Lama Kazi Dawa-Sandup, tr.
"According to tradition, this key text for an understanding
of Tibetan Buddhism dates to the time of Padma Sambhava himself
and was later hidden until the time was ripe for it to be revealed.
It describes the processes of death, of existence after death
and of rebirth, which are fundamental to Tibetan Buddhist belief
and which are of almost equal interest to Western psychologists
and theologians. The text can be used as a breviary and read
on the occasion of death, but it was also intended to serve as
a guide to the living as well as the dying. The introduction
by Evans-Wentz is itself an important commentary on both the
text itself and the doctrines it embodies." - John Pinfold,

This unique work presents invaluable material related to the
Tibetan sacred dances, which have met their doom with the destruction
of monastic life in Tibet. Nebewsky-Wojkowitz, during several
periods of fieldwork in the Himalayas, studied these Buddhist
temple dances. He brings to their description his expert knowledge
of Tibetan iconography and ritual. Of particular interest is
his translation of the Tibetan texts containing detailed instructions
for the performance of the dances.
The existence of such choreographical manuals explains the uniformity
in the performance of temple dances and the persistence of an
unchanging tradition over long periods. Realising that none of
the Buddhist rituals referred to in this book can be performed
in present-day Tibet and with the rapid decline in the art of
the "chams" dances, Dr de Nebewsky-Wojkowitz's work
becomes all the more valuable.
"Written before the flight to India of the Dalai Lama in
1959 and left uncompleted at the author's death, this is a detailed
description and analysis of Tibetan ritual dances from the Bon
period onwards, based on both textual evidence and fieldwork.
Of particular interest is the translation of the texts which
include detailed choreographic instructions for the performance
of the dances. The appendix by Walter Graf is concerned with
the performance of Tibetan music and annotations." - John

Tibetan Yoga and Secret Doctrines, or Seven Books of Wisdom
of the Great Path
Edited by W Y Evans-Wentz. Lama Kazi Dawa-Sandup, tr.
"Seven authentic Tibetan yoga texts, almost unknown to
the occidental world until their first publication in English
in 1935, are now available in this paperback edition. A companion
to the unique Tibetan Book of the Dead which the late
Dr. Evans-Wentz also edited, this volume illustrated with photographs
and reproductions of yoga paintings and manuscripts, contains
some of the principal meditations used by illustrious Hindu and
Tibetan gurus and philosophers through the ages in attaining
Right Knowledge and Enlightenment.
The editor, whose inquiry and research extended through more
than fifteen years in the Orient, spent much time as a pupil
of Hindu sages and Buddhist lamas. He has included a body of
orally transmitted tradition and teachings received at first
hand. These will be of particular interest to anthropologists
and psychologists, and to students of comparative religion and
practically applied Mahayana Yoga. Special commentaries precede
each carefully rendered text, and a comprehensive preface contrasts
the tenets of Buddhism with European concepts of religion, philosophy,
and science.
Yoga, the tap root of Hinduism, Jainism, Zen Buddhism, and Taoism,
has also influenced the development of Judaism, Islam and Christianity.
These seven distinct but intimately related books, arranged in
orderly sequence, afford a comprehensive view of the spiritual
teachings which have shaped the culture of the Orient, and which
are now increasingly enriching the West's appreciation of the
depths of the human psyche.
The late W. Y. Evans-Wentz, formerly of Jesus College, Oxford,
is also the editor of The Tibetan Book of the Dead,
The Tibetan Book of the Great Liberation, and Tibet's
Great Yogi, Milarepa. His substantial tetralogy of works
on yoga, based on translations from the Tibetan, offers an 'interpretation
from within' rarely found in the works of Western scholars. During
the early years of this century Dr. Evans-Wentz lived in India
and in Sikkim, at the invitation of the Maharaja Sidkyong Tulku,
where he studied occult doctrines intensively." - OUP

Transcending Madness: The Experience of the Six Bardos
by Chogyam Trungpa
The Tibetan word "bardo" is usually associated with
life after death. Here, Chogyam Trungpa discusses "bardo"
in a very different sense: as the peak experience of any given
moment. Our experience of the present moment is always
colored by one of six psychological states: the god realm (bliss),
the jealous god realm (jealousy and lust for entertainment),
the human realm (passion and desire), the animal realm (ignorance),
the hungry ghost realm (poverty and possessiveness), and the
hell realm (aggression and hatred). The author shows how to transmute
daily experience into freedom.

Trilingual Hetutattvopadesa of Jitari: Reconstructed Sanskrit
Text with the Tibetan Version
by Jitari. Edited by D C Chattopadhyaya
The Hetutattvopadesa, called in the Tibetan language
Gtan.tshings.kyi.de.kho.na.nid.bstan.pa, is a small treatise
on Buddhist logic. As has been the case with most of the Buddhist
Nyaya texts, the Sanskrit original of the Hetutattvopadesa
has not yet been found and until any manuscript of it is discovered,
it can be taken as lost. But fortunately for us this work has
been preserved in Tibetan translation.
The Hetutattvopadesa is a short catechism rather than
a comprehensive work on Buddhist logic. However, this catechism
sets out to discuss topics from almost the entire scope of logic.
The author, Jitari, was a great Buddhist teacher who lived in
the latter half of the 10th century AD and received the title
of Pandita of the Vikramasila University from King Mahapala.
Jitari comes after the great men of Buddhist logic and philosophy,
Dinnaga and Dharmakirti, and on the whole the Hetutattvopadesa
accords with the positions on logic held by those two great masters.
