FEATURED BOOK
Portrait of a Dalai Lama: The Life and Times
of the Great Thirteenth
by Sir Charles Bell
Read the story of one of Tibet's greatest religious and political
leaders, Thubten Gyatso, the "Great Thirteenth" Dalai
Lama. It is a portrait full of history, stories, facts and figures,
anecdotes and conversation - as chronicled by his English friend,
Sir Charles Bell. Compelling reading.
"Bell was a personal friend of the Dalai Lama and this book
... presents a vivid picture of a powerful yet also humble man
who worked tirelessly for the good of his country. He warded
off political and military onslaughts from China and sought (ultimately
in vain) for support from the outside world. Internally he sought
to introduce radical reforms to Tibetan society. This book concludes
with an account of the discovery and enthronement of the 14th
Dalai Lama." - John Whelpton, Tibet (Clio Press)

A Flash of Lightning in the Dark of Night: A Guide to the
Bodhisattva's Way of Life
by the Dalai Lama. Foreword by Tulku Pema Wangyal.
Compassion is the guiding principle of the bodhisattvas, those
who vow to attain enlightenment in order to liberate all sentient
beings from the suffering and confusion of imperfect existence.
To this end, they must renounce all self-centered goals and consider
only the well-being of others. The bodhisattvas are enemies are
the ego, passion, and hatred; their weapons are generosity, patience,
perserverance, and wisdom. In Tibetan Buddhism, the Dalai
Lma is considered to be a living embodiment of this spiritual
idea. In this volume, he explains and amplifies the Mahayana
Buddhist text written by Shantideva, on which this philosophy
is based.

Freedom in Exile: The Autobiography of the Dalai Lama of Tibet
by the Dalai Lama
In 1938 a two-year-old boy was recognised through a traditional
process of discovery as being the reincarnation of all previous
Dalai Lamas, the spiritual rulers of Tibet. Taken away from his
parents, he was brought up in Lhasa according to a monastic regimen
of rigorous austerity and in almost total isolation.
When aged seven he was enthroned in the 1000-room Potala palace
as the supreme spiritual leader of a nation the size of Western
Europe, with a population of six million. And at fifteen, he
became head of state.
With Tibet under threat from the Communist Chinese, there followed
a traumatic decade during which he became the confidant of both
Chairman Mao and Jawaharlal Nehru as he tried to maintain autonomy
for his people. In 1959, he was finally forced into exile --
followed by over 100,000 destitute refugees. Since then, in the
exile in the Himalayan village of Dharmasala, he has devoted
himself to the plight of his people and to promoting world peace
through an unwavering policy of non-violence.
Here in his own words he describes what it was like to grow up
revered as a deity among his people, reveals his innermost feelings
about his role, and discusses the mysteries of Tibetan Buddhism.
He tells of secret deals struck with the CIA as Tibet continued
to struggle for independence, talks freely of the many world
leaders he has known, and talks of the West's malaise from his
standpoint as a spiritual and temporal figure of world renown.
'A touching book, that arouses great sympathy for its extraordinary
author. --Spectator
'From the supernatural marvels of Shangri-La to the life-and-death
manoeuverings of Realpolitik: an earnest, inspiring, and wholly
captivating tale of spiritual adventure.' --Kirkus Reviews

Prime Minister Without a Country: An Interview with the Venerable
Samdhong Rinpoche
by Daniel B Haber
Prime Minister Without a Country is a precise and candid
interview with the Dalai Lama's Prime Minister, Ven. Samdhong
Rinpoche. It deals with his approach to his tenure as the first
elected Tibetan Prime Minister, albeit for the refugee Tibetan
Government-in-Exile, at the Dalai Lama's headquarters in Dharamsala,
India. A follower of Mahatma Gandhi and the principles of non-violence
(ahimsa), he speaks very candidly about his views on how future
relations with China should be developed. He also gives his outspoken
views on the future of a Tibetan nation and how an ideal society
should be organised.
This is followed by the Rinpoche's article on the principles
of Buddhist Governance based on the teachings and examples of
the historical Buddha relation to the kings at that time in India,
over two and a half millenia ago. Like the other teachings of
the Buddha, the instructions on Statecraft are just as valid
today in the 21st Century.
The interviewer, Daniel B Haber, is an American expatriate
writer and teacher based in Kathmandu, Nepal. He has spent many
years living in the Indian subcontinent and often writes about
Tibetan and Buddhist issues.
