*** Buddhism - General ***

Buddhism and Christianity

by Archibald Scott

Christianity and Buddhism are two of the world's great religions. One is a teaching that defines good and evil under the presence of a mightier being, and one is a philosophical path for the individual without a higher divinity. Are there any common threads between the two?

What concepts and concepts define these two faiths? Born from different backgrounds, can either religion truly define the condition of man or beast, of the living, of the dead, the reason for good or evil? Is there any reason to think that Christianity is more or less superior to Buddhism?

The author has sought to explore these two diverse beliefs. Each has its historical aspects; each has its own set of defined goals, perceptions and higher ideals.

Buddhism and Christianity is a riveting analysis, a thought-provoking study of the dilemma of life.

The Doctrine of Buddha: The Religion of Reason

by George Grimm

People of the twentieth century seek a religion that relies not on dogma or blind faith but that appeals to reason. The author argues that Buddhism is that religion, but that it must be the teaching as originally promulgated by the Buddha himself and not the distorted variations invented by later monks and scholars. The author sets out to discover the original genuine teaching of the Buddha. Such teaching fortunately is able to be distinguished by an infallible criterion furnished by the Buddha himself.

Gospel of the Buddha

by Paul Carus

The Gospel of Buddha is the story of an individual, who almost five hundred years before Christ, conquered the civilised world with simplicity, love and compassion. It provides details of Buddha's birth, lfie and belief, and contains parables and stories associated with Buddhist thought. First published in 1894, this work today enjoys the rank of a classic.

Who was the Buddha? What did he teach? How do his thoughts differ from those of Christ? While answering these questions in this book, Paul Carus has set off a thought-stimulating process. He has shown Buddhist and Christian teachings in an altogether new light, exploring the relationship between the two in a convincing manner.

The Gospel of Buddha will help people understand Buddhism better. In addition, the book's simple manner will also impress with the poetic manner of the Buddha's personality. However, the real purpose of the book is to sketch a picture of this religious figure of the remote past with the aim of showing Buddhism's relevance to how we live in the present and plan for the future.

The striking and beautiful line drawings in this book are based on ancient paintings from the Ajanta caves and works from the classical period of Buddhist art.

"The eminent feature of the work is its grasp of the difficult subject and the clear enunciation of the doctrine of the most puzzling problem of alman, as taught in Buddhism." -- The Buddhist

"The Gospel of Buddha will serve both Buddhism Christians as a help to penetrate further into the spirit of their faith so as to full height, length and breadth." -- Paul Carus

The Original and Developed Doctrines of Indian Buddhism in Charts

by Ryukan Kimura

This work is a unique attempt to classify the developments and evolution of Buddhist doctrine through simple charts.
The nature of Buddhist doctrines, as promulgated by the different Buddhist philosophers, is so very complex that it is impossible for beginners to understand them easily without a clear and comprehensive manual.
The author created these charts as a convenient and effective method to teach his students the history and philosophy of Buddhism. Not only beginners but also teachers, researchers and writers will find the charts useful.
Some eight different sets of doctrines have been summarised. They are: (i) the original doctrines of Buddha; (ii) the Sthaviradin doctrines; (iii) the Mahasanghika doctrines; (iv) the doctrine of Asvaghosa I; (v) the doctrines of Harivarman; (vi) the doctrines of Nagajuna; (vii) the doctrines of Asanga and Vasubandhu; and (viii) the doctrines of Asvaghosa II.
Each set of these doctrines has been dealt with as a separate topic in a separate chart as follows: (1) Cosmology - (i) Essentialism, (ii) Phenomena-rise [(a) Ontology; (b) Phenomenology]; (2) Theory of Human Being; (3) Theory of Suffering; (4) Theory of Religious Austerities; (5) Different Stages of the Religieux; (7) Theory of Salvation; and (8) Theory of Buddhakaya.

An Outline of Buddhism: The Religion of Wisdom and Compassion

by Shinkaku

Since the dawn of time man has sought to define his status in the universe, to seek a path that explains the mysteries that surround this earthly life. But what has Buddhism to offer in the way of defining these conundrums?

-- What is 'Middle Way' and what defines the 'Four Noble Truths'?
-- How can one define the 'Eightfold Path' and understand their concepts?
-- What are the 'Three Characteristics' and what is meant by 'Karma' and 'Nirvana'?

In this small book by Shinkaku we have clear and concise answers to these simple but complex questions. With the information clearly explained, no one need ever to be concerned that they have failed to interpret the teachings of Lord Buddha.

The Snow Leopard

by  Peter Matthiessen

"At sunrise the small expedition meets beneath a giant fig beyond Pokhara -- two white sahibs, four sherpas, fourteen porters. The sherpas are of the famous mountain tribe of north-east Nepal, near Namche Bazaar, whose men accompany the ascents of the great peaks..."

This is Peter Matthiessen's classic book on his 250 mile trek in the Himalayas to observe the Himalayan blue sheep and to possibly observe the elusive and almost mythical snow leopard.

But what began in part as an expedition patiently documenting nature became a personal journey of self-discovery, a reflection on the meaning of life. Written in the form of a diary, this is an account of Matthiessen's meditations during the trek through stunning landscapes and remarkable people which end with him viewing the world from a Buddhist perspective.

Winner of the US National Book Award and the American Book Award.

The Life of the Buddha and the Early History of his Order

by William Woodville Rockhill

This book is a comprehensive account of the life of the Buddha and a history of the early Buddhist order as they are depicted in Tibetan sources -- something rarely seen in modern translations and courses.

The book is divided into six chapters:
(1) The history of the world from the time of its renovation up until the reign of Suddhodana, the Buddha's father
(2) The reign of Suddhodana until the start of Buddha's ministry
(3) The life of the Buddha from the start of his ministry until the reign of Adjatasatru
(4) The Buddha's life from then until his death
(5) The history of the Buddhist order during the 110 years following the Buddha's death
(6) The history of the schools of Hinayana Buddhism.

Two additional chapters cover the early history of Tibet and Khoten (an ancient Buddhist kingdom north of Tibet).

This book is primarily a translation of works in those two great collections of Tibetan Buddhist sacred literature, the Bkah-hgyur (Translation of Buddha-Word) and the Bstan-hgyur (Translation of Teachings).

Rockhill was a scholarly American diplomat in China who was fluent in Chinese and Tibetan. He met the Dalai Lama in 1906. He also wrote The Land of the Lamas: Notes of a Journey through China, Mongolia, and Tibet (also published by Pilgrims Publishing).

*** Mandalas ***

Sacred Mandala of Buddhism

by J R Santiago

The mandala is a compact mystical diagram, concentrating spiritual energy; it is an icon of religious experience and, at the same time, a visible manifestation of the godhead.
In spite of the underlying modern prejudice that the spiritual traditions of the East are world-rejecting and inward-looking, the mandala has in recent years passed from East to West as a means for inner healing and self-orientation.
C G Jung regarded the mandala as a representation of man's need for wholeness, for perfection. Modern psychiatrists have even used it as a therapeutic device in the regeneration of shattered personalities.
This short introductory book reveals the secrets of this complex form in all its manifestations: symbol of the universe, image of God and aid to inner peace.
This book will help provoke the feelings and visions by which one can arrive at a sense of unity with oneself and with the universe outside.

*** Parables & Stories ***

Buddhist Parables - Translated from the Original Pali

Translated by Eugene Watson Burlingame

This book contains more than two hundred similes, allegories, parables, fables and other illustrative stories and anecdotes found in Pali Buddhist texts. They are said to have been employed either by the Buddha himself or by his followers for the purpose of conveying religious and ethical lessons and the lessons of common sense. Much of the material has never before been translated into English.
This book is thus a collection of specimens of an unusually interesting type of literary composition, a textbook of the teachings of the Buddha, presented just as the Buddha and his followers presented them, by discourse and example and as a collection of good stories - all in one. It contains much that will interest children; it also contains much that will puzzle the profoundest philosopher.
Contents

The Heart of Buddhism, being an Anthology of Buddhist Verse

Sayings of Buddha

Edited by Christopher N. Burchett

"Let a wise man blow off the impurities of his self -- as a smith blows off the impurities of silver, one by one, by little, and from time to time."

Buddha is not a god or a man carrying from heaven a supernatural revelation, to be accepted on faith. He does not speak of a God, a Creator. He does not tell why we live how to live. He teaches a way of life, and finally a way to achieve the ultimate happiness of Nirvana, in which a state of blissful, untroubled peace accompanies the complete opening up of understanding.

This anthology of the Buddha's thoughts and sayings provides us with mcuh food for thought. It gives us an opportunity to improve our minds, our lives and the thoughts and lives of those around us.

Note: The sayings in this book are derived chiefly from the classic compilation, The Gospel of Buddha by Paul Carus (Chicago, 1896).

A Buddhist Bible

Edited by Dwight Goddard

In these days when human society is invaded as never before by sinister waves of materialism and selfish aggrandisement both individual and national, Buddhism seems to hold out teachings of highest promise.

The writings of A Buddhist Bible show the unreality of all conceptions of a personal ego. Their purpose is to awaken faith in the Buddhahood as being one's true self-nature; to kindle aspiration to realise one's true Buddha nature; to energise effort to follow the noble path; in fact, to become Buddha.

A true response to the appeal of A Buddhist Bible is not in any outward activities but rather in self-yielding - becoming a clear channel for Buddhahood's indrawing compassion, which enables all sentient beings to become emancipated, enlightened and brought to Buddhahood.

A Buddhist Bible
contains comprehensive selections of Buddhist scriptures from Pali, Sanskrit, Chinese, Tibetan and modern sources.

The Dhammapada

Translated by Eknath Easwaran

The Dhammapada is to Buddhism what the Sermon on the Mount is to Christianity: a simple summary of its teachings, expressed with harmony and simplicity.

The work is a collection of the Buddha's sayings -- vivid, practical verses -- which were gathered from Buddha's direct disciples in the 6th century BC who wished to preserve his wisdom. The work became part of the Pali Canon (that is, those sacred works of Buddhism written in the Pali language) and as such passed down through the ages.

Sri Eknath Easwaran was a great spiritual teacher who wrote 24 books on meditation and the classics of world mysticism. These books have been translated in 19 languages worldwide.

The Dharma-Samgraha: An Ancient Collection of Buddhist Technical Terms

Edited by Kenjiu Kasawara. Further edited by F Max Muller and H Wenzel.

This work is a critical edition with notes and indices of a glossary of Sanskrit Buddhist technical terms, ascribed to Nagarjuna. A glossary of such terms is sorely needed by students of Buddhism, who find that the kind of Sanskrit used in sacred works is of a very unusual kind.
The arrangement of quotations is as follows: the Sanskrit words are followed by the Pali words. Then follow: source citations for the Buddhist Sanskrit works and their Tibetan translations; the Pali sources; and the European authors who have discussed the subject.
The editor was a Buddhist priest from Japan who studied Sanskrit at Oxford University in 1879-82.

The Milinda Questions purports to be the record of a dialogue between the Buddhist monk Nagasena and the Greek king Milinda. Milinda asks a series of questions highlighting what appear to be anomalies and contradictions in Buddhist doctrine, to which Nagasena gives clear, even ingenious, answers." (www.buddhanet.net).
This famous commentary by the distinguished Buddhist scholar, Mrs Rhys Davids, seeks to discuss the concepts in The Milinda Questions and to place that work in its history-of-ideas context.

Zen Buddhism

by Christmas Humphries

Zen is the essence and value of life, that which makes life worth living. Being that which uses and discards all forms, whether of thought, words or material substance, it cannot be described in material form.
Yet "to get it across" some form is necessary, and in this book which is not merely about Zen but which attempts to transfer the life of Zen to the receptive reader, a style must be devised for the occasion.
To this end the author has fashioned a mixture of the flippant and the deadly serious, the rational and the irrational. It leads the reader's mind to the precipice which lies between the highest thought and the humblest truth and then, by a jerk or a joke, tries to push it over.

The Buddhist Conception of Spirits

by B C Law

What did ancient Buddhists believe about spirits and the spirit world? This short book discusses the belief in "pretas" (ghosts or spirits) among the Buddhists of ancient India and Sri Lanka. The author draws materials and examples from the Hinayana Buddhist literature and especially from the Paramatthadipani (The Elucidation of the Highest Meaning) on the Petavatthu (Preta Stories), that is the commentary on the Petavatthu which is one of the books of the Khuddaka Nikaya, written by Dhammapala of Kancipura (Conjevaram).

The belief in the existence of departed ancestors and the presentation of offerings to them have formed a part of Hindu domestic religion and, to gratify this persistent belief, Buddhism recognised the world of "pretas" (ghosts or spirits).

The preta stories, as presented in the Petavatthu, are so devised as to serve the Buddhist purpose which is no other than claiming and establishing the superiority of Buddhism as a religion, changing the mode of expression of sorrow felt in the human heart, diverting the attention of the people from the beliefs to pious action, and giving an incentive to moral life by making the pictures of heavenly enjoyment brighter by means of a contrast with those of those of varying degrees of suffering in the Petaloka and other forms of hell.

After a comprehensive introduction, 61 pages of fascinating preta stories (Petavatthu) are given, translated from the Pali originals.

Heaven and Hell in Buddhist Perspective

by Bimala Charan Law

This book describes the Buddhist idea of heaven and hell prevalent amongst the people of northern India at the time of Buddha and later incorporated in the Buddhist scriptures.

Contrary to the lofty thought and teachings of the Buddha himself, the joys of heaven as set forth in popular Buddhism are represented as being obtainable by means of what seems suspiciously like a mercenary bargain, entered into in a spirit which, far from being selfless, is on the contrary frankly selfish. In fact piety practised in this calculating way, far from bringing nirvana within the reach of man, only serves to bind him more securely to the wheel of life.

The various heavens and hells of Buddhism are in reality places whose inhabitants are as much subject to the iron law of karma as are the dwellers upon the earth itself. As such, the heavens and hells may be said to exist for the purpose of providing a stage to give reward to the meritorious and retribution for the impious, as the individual proceeds through the revolving cycle of existence.

The author has collected from Buddhist literature a number of descriptions of the pleasures of heaven and the the sorrows of hell. The catalogue of crimes and their corresponding punishment according to the Buddhist faith is graphically detailed.
