Jung Bahadur Rana: The Story of His Rise and Glory

by Purushottam Sham Shere J B Rana

Of all the different Ranas who ruled Nepal from 1846 to 1950, it is perhaps Jung Bahadur Rana who is the most famous and who probably had the greatest impact on the history of Nepal.
The rise to power of Jung Bahadur Rana is documented in detail, culminating in the Kot Massacre in 1846 and the exile of the King and Queen to Varanasi (India). The visit of Jung Bahadur Rana to England in 1850, his meeting with Queen Victoria and subsequent sojourn in France are described. The war with Tibet, the confusing period of his resignation and the part played by the Nepalese army during the Indian Mutiny in 1857 are succinctly chronicled.
Further detailed information deals with the political interaction between Jung Bahadur Rana and the British, which ensured the independence of Nepal before his death in 1877.
In this book Purushottam Sham Shere Rana has opened a new chapter on Jung Bahadur Rana. It is left to the reader to decide his true impact on the history of Nepal.

Diary of a Tantric Priestess

by Claire Marie Bailey with Jack Bailey (Swami Krishna Chaitanya)

The experiences of a present day tantric combined with the experiences of her Guru and mentor this book provides the reader with an insight into the world of Tantra and its application in the contemporary world.

* What is tantra?
* How may it effect changes in our everyday life?
* Can anyone practice this art?

Whilst telling her story Claire Marie Bailey explains very lucidly how the practice of tantra has brought many positive changes into her life. An inspiring story that whets the appetite of those interested in the subject to delve further into the mystic secrets of tantra.

Claire Marie is 43 years old, has seven children (two from a previous marriage), and when she met Sri Krishna Chaitanya (this is his spiritual name), the White Guru, she had had bulimia for over ten years, owing to a bad and stressful marriage to a heavy drinker, and developed stomach cancer from misuse of stronger and stronger laxatives.

She had been a uniformed member of the Salvation Army for over twenty years, but always looking for 'something more'. She found that in the teachings of the White Guru, and in his remarkable abilities. He told her 'miracles do not prove the truth of a religion or philosophy, but if the religion or philosophy is true, miracles should happen'.

He told her that 'sidhis', for their own sake are valueless, mere dust on the mirror of consciousness, and, within six weeks of practicing tantra with him, she was healed of both her bulimia and stomach cancer.

Today she is a tantric practitioner herself, with her own group of devotees (mainly in the USA, while Sri Krishna Chaitanya focuses on India), and has seen many of them physically healed and a few attain realisation. She is a fully realised soul, a liberated individual, has sidhis, and is still a busy wife and mother.

"The life of [this] diminutive, soft-spoken 'White Guru' seems the stuff Bollywood blockbusters are made of." -- Hindustan Times

Freedom in Exile: The Autobiography of the Dalai Lama of Tibet

by the Dalai Lama

In 1938 a two-year-old boy was recognised through a traditional process of discovery as being the reincarnation of all previous Dalai Lamas, the spiritual rulers of Tibet. Taken away from his parents, he was brought up in Lhasa according to a monastic regimen of rigorous austerity and in almost total isolation.

When aged seven he was enthroned in the 1000-room Potala palace as the supreme spiritual leader of a nation the size of Western Europe, with a population of six million. And at fifteen, he became head of state.

With Tibet under threat from the Communist Chinese, there followed a traumatic decade during which he became the confidant of both Chairman Mao and Jawaharlal Nehru as he tried to maintain autonomy for his people. In 1959, he was finally forced into exile -- followed by over 100,000 destitute refugees. Since then, in the exile in the Himalayan village of Dharmasala, he has devoted himself to the plight of his people and to promoting world peace through an unwavering policy of non-violence.

Here in his own words he describes what it was like to grow up revered as a deity among his people, reveals his innermost feelings about his role, and discusses the mysteries of Tibetan Buddhism. He tells of secret deals struck with the CIA as Tibet continued to struggle for independence, talks freely of the many world leaders he has known, and talks of the West's malaise from his standpoint as a spiritual and temporal figure of world renown.

The Glory of Nepal: A Biography of Bangdel

by Narendra Raj Prasai. Translated from the Nepali by Sangpo Lama.

Lain Singh Bangdel was one of Nepal's artistic giants. He was a writer, painter and art historian who was admired both in Nepal and internationally.

Lain grew up in a Nepali immigrant family in Darjeeling and studied at the University of Calcutta. In Calcutta he wrote novels and met many influential people such as the dramatist Balkrishna Sama and the film-maker Satyajit Ray.

He lived for many years in Paris and London where he began to paint and produced some some wonderful works such as the Muna-Madan series, Mother Nepal, Pensive Mood, and Famine in Bengal.

In the early 1960s he returned to Nepal, where he devoted himself for the next three decades working with the Royal Nepal Academy, the Nepal Association of Fine Arts, and the Nepal Art Council. He became an art historian and toiled tirelessly to document and protect Kathmandu's rich artistic heritage against the predations of antique smugglers.

The Glory of Nepal: A Biography of Bangdel is the story of this fascinating Nepal artist, writer and scholar.

"Biographies are tricky, it's so easy to miss the mark. One of the best validations is undoubtedly the subject praising the literary effort of the author. And so it is with Prasai's work. The legendary Lain Singh Bangdel lauds this biography as, 'sweetly phrased, this book makes good reading.' That's recommendation enough." -- Nepali Times, 12-18 September 2003

"I felt that I was reading a novel rather than the story of my life. The incidents that have been mentioned in this book felt like a dream to me. But it is true that after I pass on, these stories, inspite of being real incidents and events, will read like and remain a story. I will not be in this world then." -- Lain Singh Bangdel

The Life and Contribution of the Nepalese Princess Bhrikuti Devi to Tibetan History (from Tibetan Sources)

by Min Bahadur Shakya

Who was Princess Bhrikuti Devi? Why is she so famous?

Renowned scholars such as Tucci, Wylie, Regmi and Bacot have long thought this Nepalese princess was a mythological figure only.

But now exciting and compelling evidence reveals that Bhrikuti Devi was indeed a historical princess in the seventh century, who was given in marriage to a Tibetan king and who subsequently changed the course of Himalayan history by introducing Buddhism from Nepal.

Although her marriage was not recorded in texts outside Tibet, Bhrikuti Devi nevertheless became a great woman in her own right by propagating Buddha Dharma. This remarkable woman was also responsible for the construction of the first ancient temples in both Tibet and Bhutan, including the famous Jokhang and Potala temples in Lhasa.

A fascinating biography for anyone interested in the history of Nepal and Tibetan Buddhism and dynamic feminist personality of the Licchavi period.

Man of Everest: The Autobiography of Tenzing. Told to James Ramsey Ullman.

by Sherpa Tenzing with James Ramsey Ullman.

This is fascinating life story of Sherpa Tenzing, who captured the imagination of the world when he climbed Everest with Edmund Hillary in May 1953.

Overnight this humble Sherpa became a world-famous hero. This book tells of the three distinct phases in his life: first, childhood and youth in a Sherpa village a day's march from Everest; second, the twenty years spent in and around Darjeeling as a porter and member of numerous expeditions; third, his life since 29 May 1953.

It is impossible not to be fascinated by the story of Tenzing. Even those not interested in climbing mountains must find themselves held by the image of an illiterate boy herding yaks under the southern ramparts of Everest, looking up at them with longing and then, many years later, looking down from that summit which is the highest in all the world. Such a tale is bound to be one of courage and hardihood; yes, and of a noble ambition leading on towards that final goal.

Shikari Sahib

by Peter Byrne

Jim Corbett (1875-1955) was one of the 20th century's greatest hunters and later a noted conservationist. Responding to the pleas of the hill people of Kumaon, northern India, who were being preyed on by man-eating tigers and leopards, Corbett hunted down at least a dozen man-eaters between 1906 and 1941. It was estimated that the total number of men, women and children killed by these 12 man-eaters before Corbett ended their reign of terror was 1,500.

In this book, the author, Peter Byrne, himself a hunter and conservationist, personally investigates the Corbett legends and gives us an in-depth look at Corbett's great man-eating tiger and leopard hunts. Byrne visits the actual sites of Corbett's most famous hunts, and interviews people who knew Corbett as well as relatives of the victims of the man-eaters.

The book features many photographs of the man-eating tiger country of north India and western Nepal, and in particular memorable and illuminating photos taken at the sites of Corbett's dramatic hunts.

Tibet's Great Yogi Milarepa: A Biography from the Tibetan

by W Y Evans-Wentz. Lama Kazi Dawa-Sandup, tr.

"Milarepa is one the greatest religious and literary figures of Tibet. He lived in the 11th to the 12th centuries and his biography is intended to demonstrate that right knowledge is obtained not by good deeds and professions of faith but by self-discipline of the mind and making it immune to worldly influences. Incidentally the biography contains much fascinating information on the social conditions of the time, and also describes some of Milarepa's yogic powers, such as the power of bodily flight, a phenomenon which has been observed in Tibet even in the present century. Milarepa was also a considerable poet and many of his poems and songs are included in this volume." - John Pinfold, Tibet (Clio Press)

View from the Summit

by Sir Edmund Hillary

The first man to set foot on the summit of Everest, the man who led a team of tractors to the South Pole, the man who jetboated up the Ganges from the ocean to the sky has, for the first time, gathered all the remarkable adventures of a long life into one volume.

But there is more to Ed Hillary than this. He is also the man who repaid his debt of fame to the Himalayas by inaugurating a programme of building schools, clinics, airstrips and bridges in Nepal which, with his still active support, has gone from strength to strength over the four decades since he accompanied his companion Tenzing Norgay up Everest's final summit ridge.

View from the Summit is a thoughtful and honest reappraisal of a life spent pushing human ability to its limits and relishing the challenges thrown down by the elements. It is also the story of a man whom the world has taken to its heart.
