and a personal odyssey into the wonderful and magical world of
singing bowls
This book divulges a few of the 'secrets' about singing bowls.
Step-by-step guidelines tell you how to work with these mystical
bowls in massage, relaxation and meditation. This handbook provides
practical and lucid information about therapeutic uses (contra-indications
included), resonance and making music.
The author, Geert Verbreke, was born in Flanders, Belgium in
1948. Astrologically a mercurial, creative and talkative Gemini,
he is an expert on Himalayan singing bowls. A passionate artist,
staunch vegetarian and non-smoker, Geert does not claim to be
a gura or a teacher.
He has
recorded several CDs. improvising with his peculiar sensitivity
for Himalayan bowls. For his own listening he is drawn to the
music of artists such as Arno, the Beatles, Gilgert Isbin, Keith
Jarrett, Stephan Micus, Colin Offord and the Pink Floyd.

Foreword
When I first visited Nepal in 1974 the valley was very rural;
one had only to walk a kilometre from Kathmandu Durbar Square
to be in countryside dotted with farms and pastoral scenes. In
the squares of the old city, musicians played each night while
cows, chickens and pigs rummaged among the natural waste of the
streets. Kathmandu was a city of artisans.
One was immediately struck by the number of craftsmen busy in
the narrow alleys of Patan, Bhaktapur and Kathmandu. Amongst
the craftsmen would be metal workers making bowls; some would
become singing bowls. Times change, some things improve, some
things are lost. The city is healthier, but not always cleaner.
Tourists have less 'singing bowels' and more money. There has
been a great awakening in things Hindu, Buddhist and Tibetan,
and a new spiritual awareness has grown among visitors.
Many new books have been published about these ancient ideas
and practices. The use of singing bowls has become mor widely
recognised and this book helps to enlighten the interested reader
about their many varied functions in making music, healing and
spiritual awakening.
