India
has a wonderful tradition of love poetry going back not only
hundreds but thousands of years.
Joy, passion, sadness, longing... These are some of the emotions
of Indian sweethearts and lovers which now can be shared by us
all through the excellent poems in the book, A Collection
of Indian Love Lyrics. |

Here is just one of the 83 poems in this wonderful collection:
Song of Faiz Ulla
Just at the time when Jasmins
bloom, most sweetly in the summer weather,
Lost in the scented Jungle gloom, one sultry night we spent together,
We, Love and Night, together blent, a Trinity of tranced content.
Yet, while your lips wholly mine, to kiss, to drink from, to
caress,
We heard from far-off faint distress; harsh drop of poison in
sweet wine
Lessening the fulness of delight, --
Some quivering note of human pain,
Which rose and fell and rose again, in plaintive sobs throughout
the night,
Spoiling the perfumed, moonless hours
We spent among the Jasmin flowers. |
Savour the rest of these exotic Eastern poems of love, romance
and mystery!
Enjoy the bold and sensuous illustrations of Indian women and
men in deep, rich colours. Appreciate the lavish illustrations
and decorations of this book in their Art Nouveau style.
The dominant notes of Indian love poetry
are caught here vividly in the poems of Laurence Hope, the pen
name of Adela Florence Nicolson (1865-1904), a remarkable woman
poet of British India, who lived and loved in Baluchistan and
Central India and came to love India and its traditions.
Her poems borrow inspiration, images and symbols from the poets
of the North-West Frontier of India and the Sufi poets of Persia
and have never been bettered since this book first appeared in
1902.
