AS THE RIVER JOINS THE OCEAN: REFLECTIONS ABOUT J KRISHNAMURTI Review by N. Banks |
| AS THE RIVER JOINS THE OCEAN is a book about
J. Krishnamurti, the human being, and about what he was actually
like as a person. Of course, Krishnamurti, author of many books
that have recorded his speech on a wide range of issues about
con-temporary life, did not want to be remembered as a personality.
This might have led to his deification yet his nephew Giddu Narayan
has recorded a sensitive insight into the man behind the great
teaching. The book is a gentle memoir that illuminates Krishnamurti
in ways that more formal biographies have not. The family genealogy
shows the humble origins of the great teacher. His touching lifelong
concern and compassion for people, and for his own family, reveal
Krishnamurti to be deeply related to humanity. Krishnamurti was born into a humble Indian family. His life was to change dramatically after two leading members of the Theosophical Society, Annie Besant and C.W. Leadbeater discovered him. Brought up to be a World Teacher, he dramatically rejected that role and the organization prepared to uphold it. Yet, he continued to teach on topics such as meditation, education and the inner concerns of man. Many around the world were touched by his widsom. The author Giddu Narayan knew him well and remembers many incidents. Often these seem almost magical such as the Hoopoe that once came along and knocked on Krishnamurti's window later on bringing its young ones; his use of yoga asana some of which were taught to him by Iyengar; his taste for detective novels and Romantic poetry; his res-ponse to various Hindu holy men who questioned him and received answers that were often surprising. Krishnamurti said once to them, " Sir, what I do is my love, and that is my knowledge!" Since writing this book, the author has died. However, the teachings of Krishnamurti continue to be absorbed by many and the man is still much remembered. This new memoir by a devoted student of the teachings is an important historical document for scholars and others concerned with Krishnamurti's unique approach to the perennial issues that perplex humanity.
